for the trope mashup game: accidently married + poorly timed confession? for whatever ship you feel like!

Trope Mashup Asks

So this spun out into a really contrived pynch au but it's fun to think about so just bear with me lol

So in this setting i like to imagine Ronan and Adam are on the older side like maybe early to mid thirties and they're attending blue and ganseys wedding in...let's say Nevada and/or other Las vegas/touristy area because that's where this would most likely work best (I said it was contrived, didnt i?) And theyve probably had a will-they/wont-they thing going on for years and maybe its fallen a bit more on the wont they side lately, but then they get to talking at the reception. I like to think they're maybe just poking fun at gansey and blue to each other at first but then one of them (probably ronan) says something to the tune of 'I thought I'd be married by now' and Adam just agrees that he thought Ronan would be married too. They're laughing a bit at it and ribbing each other over past relationships and how theyve each run them I to the ground whenever it looked like something was going to happen. They're a little bitterly joking about it never happening and that what hope was there for then really if BLUE had decided to get married despite her oppinions of it being an antiquated and fairly misogynist ritual? it comes up that theres a 24hour drive through chapel not too far away and...well, they could be married that night, mainly to one up blue and gansey but also because they're feeling a bit sorry for themselves. It's a stupid idea but they talk each other into it and figure -whatever- theyll just get it annulled, if those certificates are even real to begin with!

And they find out afterwards that yes the certificates are real and you have to be married for a certain ammount of time before you can seperate and to do a rapid separation you have to seperate in the same state you were married. So now their dumb joke has become a big headache and they end up renting a hotel to wait out the time because yes, maybe they did want to be married by 30, but not like this!

Adam's over thinking the whole thing. Like, he's technically Ronan's next of kin now; what happens if he gets hit by a car before they can get divorced? And Ronan has property he owns in Virginia and Adam's still living in apartments, so is he technically responsible for property taxes during their married time or is that negligible vecause they're only married a month? And is it bad if when hes spiralling Ronan knows exactly how to get him out of his head and forget that any of that matters? Adam regrets going along with such a dumb idea but he's also, selfishly, a little grateful for the time hes getting to spend away from his job and with Ronan. He feels a tad guilty for that and thinks Ronan wouldn't appreciate how needy that idea is.

Except Ronan is actually sort of okay with it. With everything, actually. like, he wants a real marriage and true love and all that...but it doesnt feel like he's made a mistake. In fact, the longer he and Adam are around each other, the more right it feels. They get along well, they know each others habits, and they had sort of been flirting for a few years anyway? So, maybe it isn't all bad. Maybe he wants to actually give it a go with him and see where it leads. He keeps dropping hints about it, but Adam either isnt catching them or is ignoring them. Ronan cant really stand the idea of the second, but hes got to know for sure so he ends up blurting it all out...right as they're about to sign the papers to finalize the divorce and separation papers.

They end up working it out and decide to get together, but it does take about an extra hour to convince the notary and judge that they arent just going to get married again in the next 24 hours.

It's okay! I wouldn't have minded doing it again! I'll do neighbours though, because maybe it's easier? 😂 She says...

Flirting under fire makes me think of space battles, so this is like, some messed up space au as well...

The BANG that echoes through the station is almost as loud as the hammering of Ronan's neighbour's fist on the door of his sleep pod. Ronan hates being woken by explosions.

"Lynch!" Adam yells through the door. "What the fuck are you doing in there?"

Another BOOM echoes through the station, and this time, the whole thing rocks, sending Ronan tumbling to the ground as he gets out of his bunk.

"That is not me!" he yells at Adam. "Why do you think every loud noise is my fault?"

The door whooshes open when Ronan smashes his fist against the control, and there he is, Ronan's favourite neighbour/colleague/antagonist/.

"Because, Lynch--" Another explosion shakes the station, louder, and closer. Adam grabs the doorframe to steady himself as Ronan haphazardly tugs on his uniform. "Because, ever since I got reassigned down here, every problem I've had has been your fault."

There are alarms ringing in the corridor, and a calm female voice announcing that "All staff evacuate immediately."

"Oh yeah, this is definitely my fault. An enemy craft attacks us and I definitely fucking orchestrated it for when I was sleeping." The corridors are empty of other stuff as they run down towards the escape pods. Ronan squeezes his eyes shut as he runs, praying that there are pods left.

"It wouldn't surprise me. You'd probably think it was funny." The next explosion causes both of them to be thrown into the air.

Ronan smacks into the wall, and he accidentally lands on Adam as he falls to the ground.

"Get your ass out of my face," Adam gripes. "It's not as nice as you think it is."

"Been looking have you?" Ronan says, as they take off running again.

"Can't help it, you're always hanging around in the engineering bay for no reason."

Ronan has a reason. He's pretty sure Adam knows the reason too.

There's one escape pod still waiting, two seats blessedly empty. There's a group of engineers looking worriedly out of the hatch, but they relax when Adam climbs in.

"Fuck Parrish, we were about to leave. Did you get what you went back for?" the other engineer, closest to Adam says.

Adam grins at Ronan, strapping himself in. "Yeah. I did."

!! i’m so excited about this bc this is my contribution to the first week of the mister impossible countdown! if all goes well i’m actually gonna start posting tonight—it’s four chapters long and it’s a pynch non-magic au in which adam meets ronan once he goes to university! there’s bad flirting, a bit of impostor syndrome on the side AND lots of adam lying about his past!

since you asked so nicely (thank you so very much!! 💛) have a lil bit from the part that’s already edited:

Adam tried to think of something to say that wouldn’t bring him back to the dirt and pain he’d worked so hard to leave behind.

His soda glass was starting to sweat onto the wooden table.

“Only on my left ear,” he said, tasting bile on the tip of his tongue. “Had an infection when I was a kid, it’s no big deal,” he rushed, before Ronan had time to ask about it.

It wasn’t the first lie he’d told since arriving at Harvard. Those were not part of the original plan, but it turns out people start getting curious once you let them get to know you.

Awww yeah we know this one! It's the bodyguard/pianist pynch AU! I just posted about it here but I am going to share another little snippet from it for fun!

Ronan chuckles and crosses his arms against his broad chest, staring Adam down with an intensity that makes him want to squirm and run away. He goes over the steps slowly – make a fist, no, not like that, thumb over your fingers. Okay, now legs apart but not too far, it’s all about balance, Parrish. Holy fuck, that’s the worst stance I’ve ever seen. Whatever, turn your hips a bit, stand up straight and square your shoulders. Now, when you extend, make sure you twist your whole arm and put some weight into it.

Adam listens but his brain is all fuzz. He can’t stop thinking of how hot it is when Ronan gives direction, the way his voice dips even deeper with unmatched authority as he goes over each step. Maybe his next try would be better, if Adam weren’t so distracted, but as it stands he barely registered enough of what was said, so the lame punch he throws has Ronan groaning from irritation.

“Fucking hell, you’re a whole ass mess, Parrish.” Ronan tosses his hands up and takes a few steps out of Adam’s line of sight. “Here, I’ll show you.”

I’m gonna start with the most serious one and get lighter from there, so feel free to skip the first few if you’d prefer :))

1. (CW: this is an injury story) I have one very, very fucked-up finger! I broke my left ring finger in 2018 (when I say I “broke” it, I mean it was a comminuted compound fracture, which basically means “really fucking broken”) and I had to have surgery to put the bone back together! there were some complications afterward and I ended up needing three more surgeries after that, and for most of that time my finger just kind of didn’t move (which is really inconvenient for, like, most daily activities. it’s my non-dominant hand, though, so it could have been worse). But after my last surgery and a ton of PT I can actually kind of move it! it doesn’t straighten all the way, my hand cramps up sometimes, my grip strength is pretty weak, and it def looks a little weird but honestly? that finger’s still attached and I’m pretty damn pleased w that. So if you look closely at any drawings I’ve done of myself and see a couple scars on my hand, that’s why! (also I’m sticking a picture of my old x-ray under the cut if you want to see, mostly bc I don’t usually get a chance to show off my depressingly expansive collection of hand x-rays.)

2. I play guitar! this is kind of a big deal for me, not because I’m particularly good at it (I’m not haha) but because, when I broke my finger, I pretty much had to accept that I might never play guitar again, and I’m really lucky that that ended up not being the case. 

3. I write a LOT, but I post/share basically none of it bc I never finish anything, ever. like I’ve been chipping away at the same story for years and the plot is hazy at best and half the characters are barely developed, but I’ve got a ridiculous number of isolated scenes that I thought of, wrote out, and never put into context. I’m not sure what to do with them at this point so they’re all just chilling in my drive for now

4. I wear a lot of friendship bracelets! I’m a summer camp counselor so they kind of just come with the territory, but I also just love them a lot!! I’ll probably never wear a wedding ring (I’m just uncomfy with anything that could lead to finger injuries, for obvious reasons) but I love the idea of wearing a bracelet or something instead! because if and when I get married it’ll be to my best friend and I am a huge fucking sap okay

I’ve got a ton of these bad boys, but right now I’m wearing these guys:

5. I speak German and French! I love German a lot, and although I like French I also harbor a lot of contempt for it- I’ve been learning French for longer (I started when I was 10, I’m 21 now) so it’s kind of like the way you love a sibling and also find them unbelievably annoying, in part bc you know you’re stuck with them forever. my favorite German word is “verschlimmbessern” (to try to improve something, then end up making it worse) and my favorite French word is “efficace” (which means both “effective” and “efficient”, which makes it such an efficient word, and I just LOVE that)

1. If you’re an author, how many WIPs do you currently have? (Be honest!) Too many omg, stop calling me out like this... It’s 11 okay, and that’s just the ones I have stuff written down for...

10. Mutual pining or enemies to friends to lovers? I do love mutual pining... Because if they’re both pining then it’s like idiots to lovers, which is always fun. But I am such a sucker for enemies to friends to lovers. I love when enemies find the things they have in common, and I love it when they’re friends/lovers but they still have that healthy banter/teasing in their relationship left over from being enemies!

17. Describe a fic that is still in the ‘ideas’ stage. This not one of my WIPs, it’s one I’ve written nothing down for yet, but... FBI agent Adam Parrish gets dumped with investigating an 8 year old cold-case: The murder of Niall Lynch. New evidence has come to light that might link him to an international smuggling ring of rare and dangerous goods. Adam gets sent to the scene of Niall’s murder to find anything that can link his death to this smuggling ring. And Ronan is Ronan.

WOW, these are the most definitive results I have ever seen! I'm diagnosing you with Adam Parrish stan. The symptoms of this condition include being right all the time, having the best taste in everything ever, incredibly sexy, and probably enjoying when your fave makes people cry. Luckily, the prognosis for Adam Parrish stan is very good, and doesn't include needing anything because you're right and you should say it. Good luck!
