Hugo Friedkin is holistic stupid
Remember the ONE TIME Dirk yelled due to anger and it was low-key TERRIFYING
Fool of the Universe
I feel bad for Hugo Friedkin. Despite all the things he did - from killing Estevez to imprisoning all the different Blackwing subjects to causing Franicis stroke - he is more pitiable that he is a great evil. He’s too stupid to understand what is really going on so instead he tries to default to what he knows and bring everything to his level. Riggins plan was too complex and relied too much on reacting to events, helping and talking. Friedkin just wanted clear defined orders and a clear defined goal so he made those for himself. He wanted everyone to stop running around and just sit in their little boxes. Order and predictability. Usefulness.
He wanted something like on the movies when psychic can read enemies minds or kill from distance. He wanted something like Eleven spying on Russians but he got Dirk coming and going through pools of water instead. He got random inexplicable events that completely destroyed everything he created. He got usurped and there was the whole invasion thing. He wanted order and he got more chaos than he could deal with. And he did not understand any of this. At all.
The plan was he captures them and they do what he tells them to and become useful to US government. But nothing went as planned. He couldn’t even make them stay in place not to mention do what he wanted. And he just couldn’t understand why (he certainly not going to read to figure this out). This was always the case of someone failing upwards and over his head on the chain of command. And everyone he worked with knew he was too stupid to do it properly. They switched allegiance to Ken as soon as they could.
They say it’s hard to tell stupidity from evil because the results are the same and that is certainly true about Hugo Friedkin. I don’t think that his victims care that he doesn’t do this for fun like Priest or that he didn’t really understand what he was doing like Ken. But the lack of true menace meant that when everything was taken from him - power, control, respect and even the illusion of being one of the good guys - he did pick the right side. One that could make him hero again.
The lessons both Riggins and Dirk have been trying to teach him didn’t fully fell on def ears. You can control this. It’s not how it works. You can only try to help to make it easier on those involved. And he did. And then the poor, stupid Hugo Friedkin finally landed somewhere were he got to understand what’s going on. Hopefully, we’ll see how that will pan out next season.
When I watched the episode I thought the different colour pattern of his eyes was just because he got to the backstage in a different way than Brotzmans. They were there in mind only and he came dying through a portal. But then I realised Amanda’s and Todd’s eyes are similar but now identical and now I think that the pattern can be related to the powers and personalities. Remember Brotzmans were not Blackwing subjects but they clearly have special abilities and Amanda might be the most important witchakookoo because she is the one to bring them all together. This means there are other people who are special besides just the projects.
Amanda and Todd’s powers are similar - they come from family curse - but also different and so are their eyes. The both have black Mandelbrot sets on white background but pointing in different directions. Todd’s are pointing inward and Amanda’s are pointing outwards. It might be because her powers are different - with visions and portal opening. But maybe it’s also the difference in attitude. Todd is the one who’s back on the anti-pararibulitis meds and just wants to stay with Dirk and Farah in one place. He’s the one who was still hoping for normal life a moment ago. Amanda has embraced her weirdness and powers. Her visions and her destiny. And she’s going into the world to fulfil it.
And then there is Hugo. His Mandelbrot sets are red on a black background. Being there in the backstage didn’t seem to change him much at first (see how he checks for his wounds) but these and what they allowed him to see may hint to his purpose. I’m pretty sure he has one - he didn’t just land there on accident.
I saw a lot of theories that his black and red eyes means he is evil and will used that knowledge to make everything even worse. I also saw people hoping it will make him smarter and help instead of hinder the heroes. I suppose now both of these are probable but I think the most important thing is that he has Mandelbrot sets in the eyes and that means he is connected to whatever Universe is doing. He probably just joined the tools. The new set - with Todd and Amanda. If that will be a good thing it’s really hard to say. But he is the perfect Fool - unknowing and easily led - and those have been known as the ideal tools of the Universe.
BTW If I could personally pick his fate I would make him replace Bart as the assassin so she could retire. We already know he is a killer so it’s be a good use of his “talents” while helping both in micro (Bart) and macro (Universe) scale.
why is Friedkin such a thot
Really want to write some Priestkin but the muse is asleep (and has been for a long-ass time now urghhhh)
Blackwing playing Monopoly
Friedkin: Gets super excited about buying Old Kent and Whitechapel. Goes to jail most rounds for rolling double.
Ken: Calculated, well-timed moves. Owns every train station and both utility spaces. Has all three green properties with hotels.
Priest: Banker. Openly steals money but no one ever stops him. Buys up the the last properties that complete the colour set people have been working on the whole game. Owns Park Lane and Mayfair with several houses.
