Time to talk dates! Tomorrow, 4/22/20, will be the 2nd anniversary of THE AUTODIDACT and the first anniversary of M1ST3R WH1SK3RS. I think for many of us in the West, Manga can be a tough medium to navigate. Too much to take in and we're often not the audience for a lot of it. But for people who want a digestible read that exemplifies the power of the medium, I commonly recommend Death Note. A twisted, procedural cat-and-mouse crime thriller with a Shinigami death god thrown in as a wild card. With a clear beginning and end, consistent art and a sober cast of characters juxtaposed against Ryuk (the Sinigami, and the only likeable character, IMO), this story is hugely popular as movies, an anime, or the original manga. With your local comic book store unable to order new comics, you should give them a call and clean them out on Death Note. Having spent my high school years working in a comic book store, I had the chance to sample anything I wanted. But there were two titles I never touched. Partly because they flew off the shelf too quick, but also because the regular readers were so engaged, so devoted, that the idea of peeking into the new issue before they could felt like an abuse of my access. The first title was Sandman (obviously)... but the second title was Hellboy. If you've seen the first half of the first Del Toro movie, you already know everything you need to. The story arcs and brilliant one-shot single issues can be consumed at any pace and scope, because the elemental essence of the art and writing is just so unique in voice and vision. With their distributor in a state of indefinite shut-down, your local comic book store is facing direct, existential danger. But I bet they got Hellboy in the back stock. So, a totally-known fact about me is that my high school job was working a comic book store. I know a couple things here and there about the funny books. Now, without even having to think about it for a second, my all-time favorite comic in any form (strip, grapic novel, Western issues, Manga) is Lone Wolf and Cub. Not even a close call. Ogami Itto, disgraced ronin samurai, wanders the outskirts of Edo period Japan with his infant son, Daigoro, taking jobs as a hired assassin, fulfilling a twisted, epic revenge plot that unfolds across THREE times the amount of volumes you see here before you. I bring this up now, because Diamond distributors, the nation's monopolistic source of single-issue weekly comic shipments, is indefinitely shut down, putting your local comic book store in imminent danger. And the nice thing about Lone Wolf and Cub is that it was hot in the 70s. You young kids these days know nothing about it. And each volume is largely single-issue stories, so you don't need to read them in any particular order. I bet your local comic shop has these volumes on their shelves right now. Give them a call. Clean out their inventory. Be cool.
