What would you do if at work someone brought an animal you'd NEVER seen or learned how to care for before? Are you allowed to tell people 'sorry I don't know anything about this animal I can't help'? If it's an emergency do you like, pretend it's a somewhat related animal you might have seen before and wish for the best or will that just get the clinic sued if something goes wrong?

You’re not really supposed to say “No I won’t treat this” without offering a referral or sending the patient somewhere that will treat it instead. It’s sort of poor form. The exception being you are not expected to treat any animal if doing so would put you in unreasonable danger. This applies whether the animal owner is aggressive, the animal is unable to be handled or a potentially severe zoonotic disease risk, eg horses not vaccinated for Hendra.

It’s pretty rare to genuinely have completely no idea what to do with any given species. At the very least we can go back to our first principles, but often we do make assumptions based on similar species that we know. For example, if you’re confronted with a zebra, you’re going to make some assumptions based on your knowledge of horses. Same with a rhino, having some basic knowledge of evolution is super helpful here.

I mean, I didn’t learn about every single species of turtle. But I learned about ‘turtles’ in general with some species variation. Same with birds. I might have learned about ‘parrots’ and ‘raptors’ and ‘passerines’ but we didn’t cover every single species in detail. There’s just too many. You learn what you can fit into your head, and remember where to look up the rest.

In an emergency, a true emergency, we’re just trying to keep the thing alive until the appropriate clinic opens. Some exotic animal clinics offer an after hours phone service, and I will make use of this to say “Hey, this will be your patient in the morning, this is what’s going on, what do you want me to do?” and generally speaking exotic vets have been really, really helpful in these situations so new grads especially should not be afraid to call another vet clinic for advice.

On the pronoun thing, I had a teacher list it as one of the optional things to say after your name during introductions - like ' your favourite animal, where you were born, pronouns, what you want to study,' etc, and then when she went first she said her pronouns. Nobody introduced themselves with the whole list of traits she said so it took some of the pressure off/wasn't mandatory, some people said theirs but most didn't. Ether way it wasn't notable and didn't draw attention to the person.
