Hi I’m the one who requested the sword fight. To answer you question the boy is actually a pretty good swordsman. Your explanation was indeed help, but I’m still slightly confused. Do think you could give me something to work off of for my sword fighting scene?
If you’re looking for video to help visualize it, there’s hundreds of sword-fighting scenes in films. A couple films that immediately popped into my mind were Princess Bride, Star Wars, and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Obviously Star Wars is much more stylized and exaggerated, considering that light-sabers as weapons are fictional and the fighting style includes gravity-defying backflips, but Pirates and Princess Bride follow a little more believable fighting styles. Specifically in the Pirates films, there’s a lot of sword-fighting scenes where one side ends up getting the upper hand, usually by cheating (because they’re pirates). There’s also a lot of videos that show different sword fights and tutorials teaching basic sword handling and fighting techniques.
For the most part, writers are able to get away with a lot when writing sword fights. Writing down every single technique used will probably bore readers, which is why many writers focus on sensory information, and what the characters are feeling during the fight. Learn the basics of sword-fighting so you know what you’re talking about, but you don’t necessarily need to go overboard with details.
I don’t know if you’re looking for me to give you specific ideas as to what your character should do; if that’s the case, I think you know your character, your story, and the circumstances of the sword-fight best and I cannot help with specific ideas pertinent to your story. What would make sense for your character? Would he cheat in a sword-fight, even an official duel? Or would he prefer to rely on skill?
If the boy is actually a good swordsman, even on par or better than the girl he is fighting, than anything he does that shows off his impressive skill will surprise her. He might be able to parry her attack when she believed she had found an opening, or he might be able to land a hit on her that she didn’t expect.
I hope this helps a little!
