Performing surgery on someone that they care about deeply (yet frequently threaten) because even though that someone doesn’t trust them fully, they were that someone’s only option at the time
Also growing that person’s hair out while they’re under for that surgery
(started, and) finished Compulsory and Artificial Condition today and I don’t have too many thoughts specifically on Compulsory but my braindump on AC and Murderbot in general so far (spoilers):
I am spiritually kissing Murderbot tenderly on the forehead. It’s still so good
Watching Murderbot learn to have feelings and start to recognize its more human tendencies vs its more robotic tendencies is so fun!!! The whole bit of “I watched myself on the camera and I had thought I had been doing a good job blending in but in hindsight I Was Failing So Hard” was fantastic. The “I didn’t technically not complete my job but I felt like I was letting my clients down by not retrieving their data”?? So good. Love
LOVE seeing how Murderbot and ART think of people differently because of their functions. ART caring about its crew and wanting that belonging for MB was so sweeeeet
Everything about ART is fantastic actually
ART being scared of the shows and being upset when crew members on the shows die???????? Babyyyyyyyyyy my giant asshole machine babyyyyy
MB “unlocking” the ComfortUnit at the end of AC was an interesting choice. I still don’t have a good grasp on how MB views other constructs, like it’s clear that it thinks of bots and humans and constructs all differently but it isn’t clear to me how much it values the lives of other constructs or how much kinship it feels with other constructs due to their mutual Type of Existence
Oh also NEOPRONOUNS STAY WINNING HELL YEAH
POLY PEOPLE STAY WINNING HELL YEAH
THIRD GENDERS STAY WINNING HELL YEAH
Okay back to Types of Existences
Aliens… like, I knew aliens were around because we saw the big hostile fauna in All Systems Red but it didn’t really click because it was just so much human vs human stuff going on, but this time I was really like “oh shit yeah, aliens like… are around. There Is Evidence. Hmmmm”
Also that MB always distinguishes “humans and augmented humans” implying that they’re two separate categories, even though we’ve only seen humans with pretty low levels of augmentation is interesting
I need more on the politics of the world!!! Tell me more!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay back to ART. ART gets bored. ART loves its crew. ART has a weapons array. ART????? ART I want to put you under a microscope. ART I want to read all your systems files. ART who owns you???
MB thinks about PresAux often, even a couple times outside of the context of the news of its “escape” (at least if I remember correctly)—I wonder if we’ll ever see them again (part of me hopes so but part of me likes MB off on its own. Maybe like in a few books I want it to meet up with PresAux again)
Speaking of which I wonder how MB is gonna stay under the radar. MB I’m wishing you safe travels
Anyways I thoroughly enjoyed AC as much as I did ASR, and I have Rogue Protocol in my possession and Exit Strategy is ready to be picked up at the library so I am very excited to continue
I was worried about the length of the series because I get burnout pretty fast but the fact that the books are relatively short and are (at least, so far) pretty self-contained adventures but with overarching plot in the midground (definitely not background) makes them really easy for me to read
Murderbot. My AAA battery. You genderless, sexless, ownerless, beautiful being. I hope you have your universe’s equivalent of Glee downloaded and ready to stream
Have not seen enough people talking about (what was to me) one of the most interesting parts of Mickey 17: when Mickey 17 explains to Mickey 18 why it would feel different to die knowing he wouldn’t be reprinted (because he had already been reprinted, kinda)
I don’t have a lot to say about it myself besides that that really touched me. I hope someone else felt what I felt
I think something that I want from a visual depiction of the Tridentarii that I’m missing in most fanart of them is that I want Coronabeth and Ianthe to look like they could be the same person just in different states of health. Like, I know that illness can make someone look so drastically different than their “healthy selves” that they’re unrecognizable but I feel like most art of the Tridentarii I see makes them look different not because illness/necromancy has destroyed Ianthe’s body but because Ianthe is naturally skinny, straight-haired, and cool-toned, while Corona is chubby-to-fat, has curly hair, and gets a warm palette. Which to be clear I also like. This is also good. But it makes them look like different people altogether and I wish it were more like they were the same person
I don’t do visual art so grain of salt and all that and I love all the Tridentarii art we have, this is just an aspect of their looks that I want to see explored more
