1. where i/lya and s/hane spend their days in the cottage and i/lya realizes that he is really allergic to something around the cottage

2. also in the cottage, maybe during H/ayden’s phone call where I/lya has a sneezing fit, or just really sneezy that day - he’s obviously good at stifling but its annoying for both of him and S/hane to stay quiet while S/hane is on the phone. It also doesn’t help that I/lya wants attention so bad.

3. I/lya plays in a canadian location for the first time and it make him really sneezy during the game and in the locker room too. He hates it (i need more I/lya - M/arleau friendship

4. Five (or whatever) times I/lya stifled a sneeze in front of S/hane and once he didn’t have to

gonna be on a mini hiatus until august !! i will probably still be Around just unable to fill any requests at the moment. i am currently and will continue to be super busy with a personal project until the end of july. sorry to keep people waiting on fic :((

oh boy, don’t even get me started on ilya. that’s another complaint i’ve seen but much less than complaints about shane’s character. a lot of fanfics have been guilty of this too and it takes me out of it sometimes, but i give fanfic writers more grace because they’re probably just taking the way he speaks straight from the source material. from what i’ve seen so far just from excerpts from the books online, there are things rr probably could have and should have polished up before she officially published them.

english is not my first language and i went to a school specifically for people who spoke my native language, so i didn’t get a lot of experience speaking english with fluent english speakers until my teen years, like ilya. she said she based the way ilya speaks off of mikhail sergachev, but i hear someone more like ilya bryzgalov. someone who occasionally begins sentences with verbs, avoids adjectives in the beginning, speaks english well but sometimes still follows the rules of russian grammar while speaking english; everything is a little clipped but never unintelligible.

one thing that really stands out to me is how people will have ilya use one russian word in a sentence of english. like, it’s usually yes (so да/da in russian) but then the rest of the sentence is in perfect english. that’s more of a stereotype. if you ever forget a word in english as an ESL speaker, it will never be yes, no, or hello. people who speak english as a second language don’t really tend to mix in random words from their native language while speaking english unless they’ve forgotten the english word. or sometimes i do that when i’m very tired, so not on purpose. i’m sure some ESL speakers do actually speak that way that, but it’s something i always immediately take notice of because it’s like, he obviously knows the english word for something basic like hello or goodbye.

where i think most authors mess up when writing ESL speakers is focusing more on language rather than grammar, such as forgetting words like ‘that’ or ‘it’ in front the word ‘is’, forgetting ‘a’ in front of things or actions. a native russian speaker who is learning english would probably be more likely to mess up english grammar than english words, considering russian cases. a sentence can be flipped many ways and still mean the same thing. in english, if you try to rearrange words in a sentence, it usually either becomes unintelligible or just creates a whole new sentence.

i think we should just consider the show and the books seperate entities at this point lol. that is not my ilya and shane in the books, that is fanfiction!

i assume most people think it's because "yes" and "no" are somewhat automatic responses? but i've never slipped "yes" into a sentence when speaking spanish because spanish is automatic. my brain works in spanish and only stalls out when i get to a word i don't know

i would really like to see more of i/lya slipping up in english with regard to verb tense/noun case since russian can be VSO in storytelling. but it's still largely SVO (the same syntactic structure as english!) and has "это" for the pronoun 'it', unlike romance languages. i/lya is most likely not going to be dropping "it" at the beginning of a sentence. but again, this should occur pretty early on, not after he's already spent 5+ years in the states/canada

i know i'm probably guilty of a number of errors with regard to ESL (ex. recent fic didn't use contractions with i/lya's POV, but that was from the standpoint of he'd been in america for like. three months), but i am working to correct them as i keep writing :>

I just want to say you deserve all the flowers for the fic with sick Ilya and Shane taking care of him. I love that you wrote it with Shane being so kind and understanding. So good
