Sylvie always believed they were an outlier.
They were hedonistic, trying to find slivers of happiness amid the millions of apocalypses they’d hide in during their time on the run. They were a Loki, for crying out loud. Despite knowing they were adopted and forging an alias, they would always be known as the Norse god of mischief to the Time Variance Authority, which made them a stain that needed to be scrubbed clean from the Sacred Timeline.
It didn’t surprise them when they found out they were but a fictional character, a person whose existence was only validated in the world of fiction…
But when Sylvie uncloaked himself in the second episode, he felt something warm… A warm presence from beyond their vision. Despite feeling Loki’s confused eyes scan him upon his reveal, he felt another’s warm set of eyes watching…
It made Sylvie smile, a genuine, warm smile, when he realized you finally saw him. It was there that Sylvie decided he would no longer kill the Time-Keepers just to seek revenge against them and the TVA in general. No, you changed everything. Now he wanted to meet you, the one whose presence made him feel warm amid all the chaos and bloodshed this “show” he was caged in. The moment he opened a Timedoor after bombing the Timeline, Sylvie knew he was one step closer to completing his goal.
So, why did that Loki have to ruin everything? Why was she even working for the TVA? Was she unaware of how awful it is?! It ripped away his life, for god’s sake!
Well, no matter. Whatever it took to get closer to you, Sylvie took it, even if it meant being stranded with her on a moon that was set to explode in 12 hours. Whenever she saw his intention to dip and leave the planet immediately, Sylvie glanced at you, exchanging a look that screamed, “Is she serious right now?” It eased his anxious heart when you returned the look and chuckled behind that screen you were watching.
Despite mentioning a distant relationship he once had, Sylvie bit his tongue when he thought of you. He didn’t want to tell Loki about you yet, she would think he was insane. As Sylvie drifted off for a moment of rest, he dreamt of finally crossing over to the world where you were waiting to greet Sylvie with open arms…
So, imagine how agitated he got when Loki got drunk, had them thrown off the train, and broke the TemPad, effectively trapping them on Lamentis-1. This was it. Sylvie was going to die before ever seeing you. Great.
He was lucky the TVA grabbed them by their necks to take them back to the godforsaken building. Sylvie was horrified, fighting back against his captors to break free and continue his plan. But it was all for naught…
As he rested his head on the table in his interrogation room, Sylvie thought of the life that he would never be able to achieve with you. He saw how disgusted and heartbroken you were when Loki tried to get cozy with him on Lametis-1. How could he redeem himself in your eyes after this?
Surprisingly, unlocking B-15’s memories, taking down the Time-Keepers (which were animatronics???), and trying to seek answers about the TVA’s origins redeemed him in your eyes (but by a sliver). Sylvie saw how you would avert your eyes whenever Loki tried to get closer to him in the Void. This was another factor of the world Sylvie was in that he questioned; why were they trying to push this agenda that he and Loki were destined for romance? It wasn’t just morally right (I mean, it was the physical equivalent of being forced to fall in love with your reflection à la Narcissus), it didn’t feel right.
If anything, Sylvie would have liked to share a blanket and get comfortable in the cloudy, gray Void with you.
But that didn’t matter now. What mattered was enchanting that giant, gluttonous cloud they called Alioth to cross over the boundaries of the Void and reach the Citadel at the End of Time. Getting jumpscared by Miss Minutes? Easy. Killing the mastermind who ripped away the lives of many variants like Sylvie? Not easy. He Who Remains knew what Sylvie was trying to do, and he would not let it happen. He couldn’t risk a variant who had a long history of killing Minutemen and bombing the Timeline like Sylvie possibly leave this “reality”.
He was willing to leave this reality to reach you. He dueled with Loki to make it happen, risking everything in a violent dance of sparks and silver. As the blades collided, Sylvie’s one-track mind started to waver as Loki stopped him. What was she doing, claiming she wanted to see him be alright instead of the throne?! Okay, you know what? Screw it. Sylvie dropped the sword…
But didn’t do anything else.
“But I’m not you.” He uttered. His words dripped with ice. There was nothing to accompany the romance-laced symphony in the background. Sylvie’s eyes reflected a certain bitterness as he felt you look away, sensing that you assumed something romantic had happened.
The next few moments were a blur; Sylvie opened a Timedoor, pushed Loki through it, and once she was gone, he finished what he started all those years ago. With He Who Remains cryptically telling the variant that he’ll see him soon, it was done. Sylvie fell to the floor as the Timeline started diverging, with new strands of Timelines being born as the Multiverse awakened…
But that didn’t matter now. His next goal was clear: to reach you.
