Chapter 1: The beginning
I could feel the feeling, starting from my fingers and toes and spreading through my body. My mind, still foggy, couldn’t quite comprehend what happened. I leaned forward, but the door was gone. Letting out a shriek, I hit the floor with a dull thud. My body throbbed as it registered the pain, but I couldn’t move. I just laid there for a few minutes, trying to register what happened. My muscled tensed and relaxed as I slowly sat up, massaging my temple. “Ow…” I moaned, looking around. My heart stopped when I remembered where I am. The gunshot echoed, and Nate’s last choked out breath replayed in my mind. I stood up quickly, only for my legs to turn to jelly. Collapsing, I stared at the pod, Nate’s grave. Tears sprung in my eyes. “No….” I whispered hoarsely. “It… It can’t be..” Wails heaved out of my chest as I kneeled over, my forehead meeting the wet, cold ground. I couldn't, wouldn't move. I slowly stood up after awhile my body, still wracked with sobs, and leaned against the pod to stare at his lifeless body. If it weren't for the bullet hole, I'd have mistaken for being asleep. "Ill get him back.." I whisper. "Ill get Shaun.. Ill kill the bastard who took you from me.. from us... Ill avenge you." My voice cracked as I made my vow. Turning, I limped out of the room, trying to remember the path towards the door. I looked around, but I couldn't leave through the door. The lever was on the other side. Scowling, I made my way through the other doorway. I made my way through the eerie, cold vault, shovers running up my spine. It was almost the same way I felt when I went to a haunted house when I was a kid. My thoughts were interrupted when I saw something.. Something that made my heart just stop. A giant roach sat on the opposite of the window. It looked to be the size of a cat and it took all I had not to scream. As soon as I took a step, it scurried away. Whimpering, I searched the room for a weapon, being graced with a security baton. I sighed with relief, knowing I had some protection. I wandered the halls wearily, even picking up a satchel. I pulled it over my shoulder just as I heard quick scurrying. I quickly turned, only to see a roach lunge for my face. Letting out a shriek, I swatted at it. It hit the ground, hissed and came at me again. Freaking out, I started swinging my baton, finally squishing it. I panted, my legs becoming jelly again. "F-fuck... fuck... I c-can't..." I teared up. "No.." But I continued through the vault, killing more roaches. I even managed to get my hands on a gun and some ammo! But I stored it away. Secretly, I didn't know how to use it. Finally, I made it to the damn entrance. My heart pumped, seeing all the skeletons. "Those poor people..." I whispered. I went over to the scientist and noticed a device attached to his wrist. I gingerly took it off and put it on my own, wiping it off and turning it on. Somehow, it worked! I watched in amazement as it put up stats, a map and even radio stations! After a few minutes of tinkering, I managed to open the vault door, flinching at the sound it made, slowly opening. It was almost like a bad omen, listening. Bracing myself, I went onto the elevator and prepared myself as it brought me to the surface. But what I saw... Lets say it wasn't what I expected.
