sometimes shitty opinions float past my unwilling eyeballs on this site, so i felt the need to say this.

sometimes there will be waves of people discovering that they’ve been living with a certain condition, discussing it openly, and then inspiring others to look at their own lives and look into that condition and realize that they may in fact have that same condition. this is just a thing that happens. hearing someone else describe their lived experience and realizing through self-reflection that you’ve lived something similar does NOT mean you’re “copying” them or “faking it to be popular.” that is literally just how self-discovery works.

I spent decades resisting the idea that i might have autism or bipolar disorder or (especially) DID, because i saw so many people getting screamed at for being “fakers” who were stealing precious resources from people who Actually needed help. and then it turned out that yeah, i did have all of those things, and i could have been getting help i needed, but i got scared off by overzealous gatekeepers.

so if any of you out there ever feel the urge to make or reblog a post that’s like “You Just Think You Have X Because You’re Too Online”, you need to realize that YOU, in fact, are the one who is Too Online to have any kind of serious conversation about disability. you don’t get to say a stranger is lying about their lived experience because you’ve been seeing a lot of tiktoks about DID lately. consider that others have entire lives of their own and they understand themselves far better than you do, no matter how many of their posts you’ve glanced at. your For You Page is not the center of the universe. go outside.
