Maybe it’s a cultural thing. The nonchalant plate-smashing seemed too extreme to me.

The themes ring stronger in the original, I feel, because in East Asian society, married daughters are traditionally seen as marrying out and leaving her family for another’s(though this sentiment has changed in modern times). The daughters leaving the father, and his house, is more permanent and tragic in this cultural sense. And a daughter choosing to stay and take care of her father is more noble, more self-sacrificing act.
