The bookshelf-shaped standard tank that fits 35x12x12 that I wanted is shipping, along with the added cat tree that mom's always wanted for a while to make four in their greenhouse... so... hopefully when it arrives mother will not be Proper Controlling despite be having all the stuff already and such.
It's only a 24 gallon long, with a lil sponge filter and pump as well as some good sandy substrate with a bit of added Stoney River pebble as well, which should be fine for eventual corys and/or bristlenose pleco. Following schools will depend on after plants and bottom-feeders arrivals, of course. If I end up with breeding shrimp or possibly smaller fish like dwarf oto catfishes and endler guppies (my two limited species for the 10 gal) I could move excess of those to the big one, and excess shrimps to a small one I've yet to have if I slip in a cheap 2.5 or something later.
I have all the substate for the new one, as well as some anacharis which will work nicely, and eventually a new banana plant. The other plants I want I will need to be on the lookout for since I would like to try to aquascupt a tank which has only North American native plants as part of the environment for the varying fish/inverts (I want pearl weed, a cardinal plant, and a micromeria (Creeping Charlie) as well as Jungle Val for it along with some Azolla and other plants!.
Fish update!
I’ve read the comments I’ve been getting on my fish tank questions. For starters, I think both my danios are super stressed out because there’s only two of them and they have a new food. (Dog ate the other one). Hopefully they’ll calm down after I get some new ones.
The betta tank water is turning a light tea color, still no nitrites on the test strips, but I’m getting the API master kit soon (once the am*zon gift card system starts working).
Yes, I know pet smart/co is not know for good quality, or practices, or being good. But the only other LFS in my area is....questionable. They sold me dyed danios that only lasted about six months, and didn’t have normal kind. They recommended and allowed my brother, in his newly set up ten gallon tank, to keep (against my warnings)
-gourami
-peacock eel
-spotted Pleco (nearly full sized)
-1 single panda Molly
So I’m going to take my chances with petsmart/co.
More updates to come when I get the api master test.
My tanks and fish population right now is sad There was some god awful bacterial infection out brake in the 10 and 20 and I lost 5 fish in total the two in tubs are the only survivors ovb daily water changes. 15 gallon is going strong 5 gallon home to my one eyed child is also going strong 2.5 is next to it I'm wondering what I want to do with it what can you even put in a 2.5?
One of my rasboras was flashing, so I got up and checked the water parameters since I changed to a new filter yesterday. To my surprise my parameters are 0/0/5. I was shocked that my nitrates are so low... I guess my plants are doing their job. I've never seem them below 10, and its almost water change day so they'll go even lower! Crazy. When should I start supplementing nitrates? When they read 0???
Now I gotta figure out why the fish was actually flashing, though. Don't see anything wrong with her scales. I'll keep an eye on her... Maybe she just had an itch? Idk.
And here's my tank after a cleaning... I'm having massive problems with hair algae. I can't possibly scrub it off every plant and surface so I guess I just gotta deal with it.
It seems the only plants I can actually keep alive are crypts, anacharis, and that one lonesome anubias. Oh well, at least it's something. Most of my pennywort died and my amazon sword isn't looking too hot. Wisteria just turns black and grows fungus, and the camboba just kinda... Exists but never grows. Ho hum :T
Tank updates
10gal: Starting with it because it is the only tank that wasn't hit with any sort of illness. I added a third ADF just over a week ago, and it seems to be doing well. The Kraken seems to be doing well, he still spends most of his time laying around but it seems to be normal for him. The Endler and the Green Cobra guppy who are left still spend every waking moment harassing eachother. 5gal cube: The Betta (still not named, will name him if he pulls through) in this tank was nailed with Ich, and is still eating but is spending most of his time laying at the surface near the back on the plants. He only comes out to visit once or twice daily. I think he has some type of swim bladder issue anyways. It isn't really bad when he's healthy, but I think because the Ich has knocked so much out of him he doesn't want to put the effort in swimming. I feel awful and will probably be doing a salt dip today. His tank is being treated with Paraguard. QT: lost 5 Cardinal Tetras so far, left with my two original Neon's and one Cardinal, plus the Platy who has been sick for weeks. They still don't look very good, but I'm struggling to figure out what is actually killing them. They've gone through a complete treatment of API Fungus Cure, and are now being treated with Paraguard, the Ich isn't looking much better. Before the fish died, it almost looked like they were shedding their skin, which is obviously bad. 29gal: This tank is looking pretty good now, temp is still at 86F but all signs of Ich are gone, the Platy's who did have a light case are completely clean. I'll probably start bringing the temp back down on Thursday or Friday. A big restock coming to this though! I'm going to sell all of the Platy's (4-5 depending on whether or not the one in QT recovers) and give away the remaining Neon's/Cardinal, whoever survives. Of course, only once I'm sure they're healthy though. Planned stock: 1x DG 2x Guppy 8x Harlequin Rasbora 8x Celestial Pearl Danio 8x Corydoras (an appropriate species for the temp, I have a list of 8 that I'm researching right now) [new] 1x Bolivian Ram [new] Temp will be 76F.
