1/6 female characters: Serena Berg (The Adventures of Serena Berg)
Webseries You Should Be Watching-- Sapphic Leads Edition
The following is a list of 5 great webseries that feature sapphic women as the main character.
The Adventures of Serena Berg
Starring Kendall Chan as Serena Berg
Description: (From the tumblr page) The Adventures of Serena Berg tells the story of Serena Berg, a tough transgender girl who kicks ass and takes names. She makes personal video diaries for her fraternity brother, who has moved to New York. When Serena’s best friend Roxanne falls for Chris, the new guy, she begs her to set the two of them up. Serena agrees, and finds herself wooing Roxanne through Chris. As time goes on, Roxanne must determine if Chris is really the one she’s falling in love with. Meanwhile, Serena is hiding a secret of her own, one that could change everything between her and Roxanne.
My comments: Full disclosure, I’ve only seen the first few episodes of this show, but everyone I follow who watches it adores it.
The Adventures of Serena Berg is based off of Cyrano de Bergerac. It is currently airing.
The Grey Tarmac Road
Starring Ingrid Nixie Greep as Trudy Whyatt
Description: (From the tumblr page)Trudy Whyatt always wanted to escape the big city, so when a year abroad in a sleepy English town is proposed she couldn’t be happier. Until of course the sleepy English town turns out to be the headquarters of a massive corporation with weird place names and weirder politics. And that’s before the explosions and threatening notes start…
My Comments: If you like the “place becomes home, people become family” trope, you’ll adore this series. All of the characters are incredibly lovable and human, and the character dynamics alone are enough for me to recommend this show wholeheartedly.
The Grey Tarmac Road is based off of The Wizard of Oz. It is a completed series.
The Uncanny Upshurs
Starring Roxie Justice as Agatha Upshur
Description: The Uncanny Upshurs is a vlog-style webseries that follows Agatha and Wally Upshur, a set twins who have found themselves at college in different countries. While their vlogs start out as a way to communicate with each other, they transform into a documentation of the strange things that have started happening around them. Surprise! It’s magic, and the Upshur twins are now in over their heads deciding which side to join in a schism between different sects of the magical population.
My Comments: Watch if you like any of the following: Urban fantasy, good world-building, interesting character dynamics, annoying vampires, asexual+aromantic sirens, or reflective surfaces.
The Uncanny Upshurs is currently airing. It is an original story.
Twelfth Grade (or Whatever)
Starring Sarah Taylor as Viola Messing
(Viola is a demigirl but I think she still counts as sapphic. If that’s wrong let me know.)
Description: “Sam” (spoiler alert it’s really Viola she’s pretending to be a boy for a convoluted social justice scheme) attends an all-boys boarding school, where “he” has fallen in love with his best friend (and roommate) Oren. When Oren announces his love for Liv Belcik, Sam is sent to convince her to go out with him. Unfortunately (or fortunately for us Violiv shippers), Liv immediately falls for Sam.
My Comments: I love this series. It is quite frankly the best adaptation of Twelfth Night I’ve ever seen, although I might be biased because of how well it lines up with my reading of the source material. If you’re looking for hella bi Shakespeare media, this is for you.
Twelfth Grade (or Whatever) is based off of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. It is a completed series.
Project Green Gables
Starring Laura Eklund Nhaga as Anne Shirley
Description: Anne Shirley lives in Avonlea with her adoptive family, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Always lovable and constantly getting into scrapes, Anne works to understand her identity among a colorful cast of characters: her best friend Diana, classmates Ruby and Jane, the goggly-eyed Charlie Sloane-- and her nemesis, Gilbert Blythe.
My Notes: Quite possibly my all-time favorite webseries. This is a really innovate adaptation because it makes many changes from the source material, but manages to hit all of the right tones and emotional notes. The changes often draw out the themes of the story better than could have been done if it had stuck more closely to the books. While I will take up arms and battle anyone who speaks badly of this series, it has been brought to my attention that some people think the beginning is to slow. My response to that is: stick around even if it’s slow at first. It’ll be worth it.
Project Green Gables is based off of the book series Anne of Green Gables. It is currently on hiatus but should be back later this month.
if someone did a female friendship gifset of aosb i would probably cry just saying
