The Sorrows of Sturm und Drang 27th August 1730, birth of German counter-enlightenment philosopherJohann Georg Hamann, known as “the Wizard of the North” Hamann work would later be associated with the foundation of German romanticism, and the ‘Sturm und Drang’ movement. Influencing Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and Soren Kierkegaard, Hamann also would become a key influence to German philosopher and inventor Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, who was also born on this day in 1770. 28th August 1749, birth of German writer and social philosopher, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, considered the greatest German literary figure of the modern era. An early follower of the ‘Sturm und Drang’ movement, with Johann Friedrich Schiller; Goethe also corresponded with Prussian polymath, geographer, naturalist, explorer Alexander von Humboldt. In 1774, Goethe published his first novel, ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’, one of the most important works from the 18th and 19th century ‘Sturm und Drang’ movement, where free expression of emotion was preferred over what the movement saw as the constraints of the Enlightenment. The success and cultural impact of the work propelled the previously unknown Goethe into one of the most important literary figures of the age. The stories of unrequited love, which influenced the beginnings of romanticism, also created the bizarre European phenomenon of "Werther Fever", where young men upon reading the novel began to dress in the same clothes worn by the main character Werther, as described in the story. In the story racked by his unrequited love for the character Charlotte, Werther eventually commits suicide with a pistol.
