A Tanypodine Chironomid midge endemic to Aotearoa - the main islands and the Chathams. That's the entirety of the information I have on them.

#2673 - Spilogona maculipennis

From a large genus of Muscid flies. I'm not sure if the species is endemic to Aotearoa or not, but the majority of sightings of the genus on iNaturalist are in that country. On the other hand there's a thin scattering of them elsewhere in the world. Apparently if the fly has a shining, undusted proboscis and clearly visible prestomal teeth, then it is definitely a Spilogona. There's also over 50 undescribed species.

The Great ACT-NSW-NZ Trip, 2023-2024 - South to Central Otago

Via Tarras, the Lindis Valley, and the Lindis Pass. We stopped a few times to stretch our legs, but not for long.

But I did see a few species, and unfortunately, a few of the introduced ones that have showed up all over the place. And a plinth commemorating the introduction of red deer to the area, while we're talking about bad ideas.

Album reviews, 4/28/18

Tarras- Rising: Last of the random extra albums for now. This is a really solid Celtic folk album from 1999. I have to admit I like the instrumentals more than the sung pieces, but I would definitely look for more by this group! 7.5/10

Jimmy Eat World- Integrity Blues: There's a name I haven't seen in forever. They've gone solidly into the alternative part of alt-rock, far from their pop punk roots, but other than that, I don't have a lot to say about this. Needed more songs like "Get Right". 5.5/10

Enigma- The Fall of a Rebel Angel: Oh wow, Enigma's still around! And they're... making music I regularly hear on Youtube? Seriously, vocal chops feature in more than one track here. It's weird, but welcome. The really weird thing about it? The version I have, at least, comes with three extra discs of the 'story' (this is a concept album) being narrated in English, Spanish and French. That's intense! But yes, overall, you need that narration to get the story here, because this is less New Age and more just ambient. It's pleasant, likely won't stick with you, but it's good to know they're still making music. 6.5/10

Rachel Platten- Wildfire: I'm pretty sure I've heard "Stand by You" before, and definitely "Fight Song", but otherwise, I know nothing about this singer coming into the album. This is in many ways your standard pop record, though I won't deny Platten has a fantastic voice, which the producers often make great use of; just check out "Speechless". That's really all you can ask for from pop. 6.5/10

Animal Collective- Painting With: This is the most fun I've ever had listening to experimental music. Animal Collective have always been kind of weird, but this takes the cake. From the raucous opener "Floridada", you're taken on a roller coaster ride of bizarre proportions. I never had any idea what was happening to me, and I was always pleasantly surprised. This is really something! 7.5/10

Tarras...After Queenstown, we wanted to go to some Fjords and made our way to Te Anau. We didn’t have time for Milford sound and we were really sad about that. On the way to Te Anau, we drove along a huge and beautiful lake...unfortunately it started to rain again and it didn’t stop. So when we finally arrived in Te Anau, there was nothing, we could do! After a walk through the town, a nice coffee and after we viewed some fog, we decided to drive into the direction to Christchurch, cause we had to drop off our campervan there. We were lucky and found another place where we could stay for the night for free...it was at a beautiful lake near Tarras and it stopped raining...that’s all we wanted!
