when worlds collide
it was brought to my attention by @caleblandrybones that one of the letters written by a member of the franklin expedition states that the experts found similarities between natsilingmiutut and "tartar" — which, i imagine, refers to the 19th century state of tatar language and its closest relatives or the group of turkic languages of peoples labeled as "tartar" by russian empire and europe as a whole! to me, the most prominent similarity is occurrence of the /q/ sound in inuit and most turkic languages and both groups being agglutinative languages. a very pleasant surprise to see how my current areas of interest intersect — my heritage, indigenous languages and linguistics in itself, "the terror" series and the lost franklin expedition coming together in that single letter by lieutenant james fairholme
