Hi there, I've been gifmaking for a while on my BTS account, but I decided to take a break. I just redownloaded photoshop to gif again, but I've noticed that every time I try to post a gif, they become extremely blurry, even though the pixel widths are correct - 540, 268, and so on. I was wondering if you have any tips, your gifs are so beautiful! Thank you.
hello! first of all, thank you for your kind words and welcome back to the bts side of tumblr ;; ah yes, the gifs turning out to look blurry is always frustrating :’/ i’m not entirely sure if your gifs look blurry only when you upload them to tumblr or? but i’ll give you some tips that have helped me before:
the dimensions, as you mentioned, should be the correct size, that’s very important to avoid blur/grain on gifs, i believe these are the most recent ones;
coloring! usually coloring from scratch can result in grain, depending on how you color your gifs of course, so sometimes psds help with that. when making your coloring, be careful with curves and brightness, gifs might lose quality if you don’t balance those out, when dealing with selective color, setting the blacks to 100 helps but it depends on the scene you’re giffing! for that same effect, exposure helps too, i’m not sure how to explain but my settings for exposure look like this;
sharpening is extremely important, you can create your own sharpening action, or look for one of your preference, i recommend this one. but you can also use topaz (personally, i really like denoise & clean), it makes all the difference to maintain (or add) quality to your gifs;
it depends on which photoshop you’re using as well, from personal experience i know that sometimes gifs can lose quality when you’re using cs6, so i’d recommend cc (my favorite) or cs5, both are great; i’m currently using cs6, but i’m careful with coloring and sharpening to avoid such problems;
settings are also really important, these are my usual settings for gifs
if i’m using cs6 + topaz, i’ll go with diffusion instead of pattern, it looks better that way for me. you can also experiment with both selective or adaptive, and see what you think looks better^^
