City of the dead sorcerer
City of Dead Sorcerer
WEBTOON: City of Dead Sorcerer by Carnby (Illustrated by Team Getname)
STATUS: Ongoing
SYNOPSIS: After the discovery of a supernatural substance commonly known as mana by Russian scientists in 2014, human has found a way to utilize the power of mana with the help of technology where any one can cast magic with the right tools. By 2030, rules and regulations on the usage of magic has been set in place by the government to ensure the safety of the general populations. Even with the strict rules and measures in place, Detective Kim Hyun Ook was stumped with his latest criminal investigation. Several criminals has been murdered with forbidden and restrictive magic, and the authority has not been able to determine or find any leads that could help to catch the perpetrator. The only clue that they had from eye witnesses’ interviews was that the perpetrator wears a crimson robe. To make the matter worst, the crimson robe has gained popularity with the public for he has “helped” rid the city of criminals. Detective Kim vowed to catch the crimson robe and bring him to justice.
PERSONAL NOTE: The art takes some time to get used to, and the story goes beyond just catching crimson robe. It leads to a bigger conspiracy as the story progress. There’s a lot of death in this webtoon and it’s plot driven = text heavy, but there’s also humor to lighten the mood.
If you ever feel in the mood for a romantic lovely story...
...Don’t freaking read this one. Do not. Really.
“Let’s get all the tropes that appear in dramas and make a melodramatic story that isn’t a trope.” - the authors
As they put it this is a cynical love story. So if psychological + horror + romance (+ little bit of supernatural) is your type of thing, this is a mystery story with sufficient twists to become addicting. If not...well...it does have some *sweet innocent love*, why not give it a go anyway? :)

Melo Holic review
'Have you been addicted to love?'
Melo Holic is a Korean webtoon available for online reading and translated into English by some cool people. Go read it.
Seriously guys, Team Getname did this- creators of Hanged Doll, Superior Day and currently on City of the Dead Sorcerer. All of them are awesome.
Synopsis
The story's about a man isn't really in touch with love. Age 28 and he's never had a girlfriend before, not that it bothers him, because love sucks. Or as he would put it "the most selfish emotion a human could have."
But after some Wise Old Speech by his (unrequited) bff corresponding with him meeting the same girl twice in a park, he decides to screw his negative view on love and give it one more go.
But love isn't that simple and it breaks all the shit.
It would at first seem like a fuzzy love story, but you know guys, I think I'll just be pretentious and call this a deconstruction of the romance genre. Just stick around and watch the world burn. Because dude, this story gets dark. It takes a lot of romance cliches and fish-slaps you with it. The plot is always moving at a good pace and trolls you with some twists that really go outta control in the finale.
But don't worry, if you're here for some romantic comedy, this serves plenty. Rainbows and hearts for everyone!
Characters
Oh god, these characters. I love them to pieces. There are actually very few main characters, one being a spoiler alarm so I can't talk about him D: so many emotions for that guy
So, first off: Yoo Eun Ho
The hero of the story who tries to do the Romance with zero previous experience. He comes off as a bit of a stiff at first, being the kind of teacher who'd confiscate your stuff if you mess about in his class. Surprisingly not very tsun.
He has a lot of dumb cutie moments but also endures a lot of hardships throughout the story and goes through quite a bubbly transformation~
Choo Ji Eun
This charming and cute lady is obviously the main love interest, or in other words: awkward Eun Ho's target in doing the Romance with. Extremely honest and hardworking and cute she is an easily likable girl and- omg she is so cute.
Don't get me wrong, there's more to her than her adorableness but it's hard to talk around the spoilers (she certainly has an interesting life going on) so I'm just sticking to my initial response of her.
Ma Gang Jun
Oh lord. This guy. This fabulous dumbass. He plays the difficult and taxing job as Eun Ho's bff. He is usually target to said bff's Morning Star but that doesn't stop him tagging around. Gang Jun helps Eun Ho out in multiple situations (all of which revolve around the Romance with Ji Eun, of course), providing the best comedy and cheerio smiles the story has to offer.
I mean, come on guys. Just
look
at this
cutie.
Art
Melo Holic is a fully-coloured comic. Fully-coloured. All of it.
The art is consistently neat and simple, which only adds to the cute light-romance feels in the beginning. The colours and shading is tidy too, can be a bit pasty but Team Getname can work up a mood when it needs to, using shadows and varying gorgeous colour schemes, or even going monochrome for some Dramatic Tension.
All the backgrounds seem to be made digitally and can be a bit blocky at times, but overall, it suits the art perfectly well again for its super-neat style.
Final Thoughts
If I have failed to spark at least a peanut-sized amount of interest for this webtoon even with Gang Jun's swag then try and withstand the irresistibly precious Ji Eun munching on a spag bol.
Ahem. Anyway, my overall biased score for Melo Holic considering story, characters, art and personal enjoyment would make it a 9/10.
Though I didn't have a problem with it, I know some people didn't really like the twists in the end. In fact, I had very little problem with the story in general, as you could see. The romance can be a little cheesy at times, but this is quite deliberate and well, I can forgive it if it's coming from dear Eun Ho.
Thanks for reading!
PS I guess I should at least add one picture of Eun Ho and Ji Eun being a couple, right? Get a load of this.
Too out of context for you? Fine, have this instead.
Thanks for reading~
Melo holic. This is interesting!! Haha
