Tea At The Cabin & The Exploring Gaiwan

This isn’t gonna be a post with any kind of review or information. Instead here you will find (if you care) some photos I took this past weekend while staying at a cabin in the middle of nowhere. Got to spend almost the whole day alone, cut off from the outside world which was very well needed. I had a few outdoor tea sessions and found my little gaiwan traveling through the woods surrounding the cabin.

The ultimate tea session was had this afternoon with the legendary David Lee Hoffman. He generously brewed 15 exceptional teas with us and then prepared an extraordinary lunch of split pea soup and braised lamb shanks. My New Gaiwan!

This past May, we got a cat.

I didn’t want a cat, but my wife did, so we got a cat. While it is very cute, it is also a major hazard to a house full of breakables and collectables. Several lovely items have suffered her wrath since she arrived, including not one, but two of my gaiwans.

First she broke my beautiful red wedding gaiwan, pictured in previous posts then she broke my small single session gaiwan I use when watching television. And so my wife (yes my wife, not the cat as she loves to claim) bought me this beautiful new gaiwan to replace what the demon spawn has destroyed.

I absolutely love this one. It’s perfect for single sessions using a slightly larger cup and good sessions of two or three people. The color and detail is flawless and comes one a beautiful matching base which also acts as a water catcher when not using a tea tray or basin. It fits perfectly in the hand and allows for lots of control when pouring tea.

Hopefully this gaiwan gets to stick around for a while, and more so, hopefully the stupid cat doesn’t find her way to my $200 gaiwan.
