hello! this might be something so stupid to ask you out of nowhere but i just saw you blog pop in google while i was searching how to deal with this tumblr issue so im gambling rn by writing to you ..

according to your post youve been facing some reblog issues im guessing? bc thats my problem at the moment, ive written to tumblr several times but nothing seem to come out of it

a post of mine, rather, written fanfiction, cannot be reblogged by me and everyone who tries. it just clicks out, crashes, goes blank page and im back to my own blog. idk whats wrong since only crashes on app, the web reblog works okay

ive especially invested my time and efforts into that fic, probably my most favorite thing ive written and this what’s happening to it. it makes me sad bc it only happens to this fic, everything else (my other works) can be reblogged.

writing something for only to be treated like this, makes me sad bc reblogs are one way to support somebody for giving out free content.

hopefully, i didn’t bore you, im just shooting my shots at this point:(

Hey, I appreciate you asked me about this, but when it comes to troubleshooting, you can't make much headway without looking at the actual post. I am posting this publicly, though, in case others have experienced the same thing and may know a fix. My initial guesses would be: (a) the post is too long (even though I don't know why that should matter), or (b) your blog's style is causing it to break. But there's really only so much one can say without seeing the actual post, I'm afraid. :(

Heyyy, I've got some questions, but eel free to ignore them. What would be the gender neutral equivalent of sir/ma'am and are there any other gender neutral titles like mom or dad besides parent? Thanks.

i don’t have sources for all of these but heres some words i use and some i found on wikipedia or random websites

mom/dad/parent- guardian/ guard, caretaker(?), birth giver, zaza

lord/lady- lox

mr/ms/mrs- mx, ind

daughter/son- child, spawn, kiddo, 

sir/ma’am- misc, mer, ser (rhymes with hair)

ladies and gentlemen and esteemed guests

niece/nephew- nibling, sibkid

aunt/uncle- pibling

prince/princess- princex

Hey Foley I'm finally getting around to using my iPad for more that notes and the biggest issue I've when drawing is finding a good free app(is it really worth paying, if so any recommendations?) And the fact that there's no friction! My lines are never clean and I keep going back to paper. Sorry I know you get a lot of these but I'd really love your help!

I’m not up on any free drawing apps, but I feel you get the greatest bang for your buck with Procreate. I use that and Clip Studio Pro, but CSP is subscription based and that’s really only worth it if you work in that program A LOT. 

For basic doodling and getting comfortable with the iPad as a tool, I’d say invest in Procreate.

Now, as far as that lack of friction… I personally don’t notice it, but my move was from a Cintiq to the iPad, glass to glass. You’re going PAPER to GLASS and that’s a tough transition. There is a product called PaperLike that you can pick up that helps add more grippy surface to your iPad screen. I have a few friends who I trust who really like the feel.

Hi, Lauren! I have a sort of technical queation. How did you learn sound editing and all the technicalities of podcasting? In my career (social communication) I have the chance to do a year of radio or a year of TV, and while I REALLY want to try podcasting at some point I have the idea that working on TV is something slightly more difficult to be self-taught. Did you take classes on sound editing/effects/whatnot? Or is it something that could be learned via tutorials? Thanks!

I have a tiny, tiny amount of legit knowledge about sound editing that I picked up during internships in public radio/getting a degree in music. But really, all my knowledge came from YouTube/Adobe tutorials and then just messing around on the software for hours. 

While sound can get very technical and complicated, I can say with confidence that you can make a podcast without knowing much about it (though I make what I think is a much better podcast now that I have the wonderful @mischaetc working with me). TV involves a lot more equipment and software because there is the additional visual component. And because TV involves sound editing (albeit, TV sound and podcast sound are different), I would imagine that would be more useful.

How to use your AO3 inbox effectively

I’ve noticed that many authors only use those handy but limited-in-functionality email announcements of new fic comments. Many have also said that they find browsing individual story chapters’ comments sections so that they can see which discussions individual comments are a part of. In the AO3 inbox, you can actually do this very effectively, but many authors don’t seem to know about it!

Sure, you can reply to comments quickly by clicking on the email link, but really keeping track of which comments you’ve not replied to kind of requires taking up using the AO3 inbox, which is a powerful and easy tool for reader interaction management. You can easily still also use the email announcements for replying because it’s all synced, but I strongly recommend glancing at your inbox every once in a while to make sure you haven’t missed or forgot about any comments.

Here’s how.

That’s a link to your inbox on the left. Unless you’ve deleted stuff off there, it will contain all the comments you’ve received, ever. The number in brackets next to the circled link is the number of unread comments (aka comments which have not been marked as read OR been replied to). The simplest way to understand this number is that it’s how many comments have been given about which you haven’t decided what to do (reply/ignore/delete).

(Tip: Browsing the older parts of your inbox is fun for a bit of encounraging bedtime reading.)

You can choose to only see these comments to which you haven’t reacted to. There are useful filters on the right.

And now comes the only unintuitive thing you need to know to make full use of your inbox: click on the name of the story in a comment, and you will be taken to a separate page.

Now, you’ll be faced with four choices. You can reply directly, delete the comment, or see the whole conversation the comment is a part of. “Thread” shows you the discussion from this comment onwards; “Parent thread” shows you the entire conversation it’s a part of. Let’s choose “Parent thread”:

Voilá! People who complain that they don’t like the inbox because can’t keep up which story and which chapter and what conversation comments are a part of probably just haven’t found this option yet. On this page, you can neatly respond to every part of the conversation you want to. A lot easier than trying to sort through all those emails to work out who said what and when and which messages you’ve replied to or otherwise reacted to.

If you reply to a comment via email, the system will automatically mark it as read and replied to in the inbox as well.

“But what if I’ve never used it and it’s got lots of comments and I sure don’t want to go clicking through all those old ones to clear the inbox”, you may say. The possible solutions are: 1. go through the comments by clicking on the options “select all” and “mark as read” OR 2. just ignore the old stuff and start using the inbox from now on. It will always show you, by default, the newest comments so you can just jump in at any time and start using it from that moment onwards without having to see all the old stuff. The number on the link may not ever go to zero, but let’s not be so OCD about it cleaning up all the old stuff doesn’t feel like worth the hassle. Not doing so won’t prevent you from making full use of the inbox. I don’t tend to read the email announcements these days; mostly I just check the AO3 inbox number and if it’s not zero, I know I’ve got new comments to which I then reply to neatly right there.

It means you've used 12MB so far, and when you reach 1GB your phone will automatically warn you :) though I'd suggest setting the warning a little lower so it tells you before you reach 1GB...

Thanks @calalac! The weird thing is that right before taking this screenshot, I had just gotten a notification saying “Warning: you have reached your 1GB data limit.” Which is why I was so confused when I went and checked my data and it said “12MB”. Do you know anything about that...? (It’s probably based in my own technological ineptitude, lol, but that’s why I’m appealing to the Tumblr hivemind as a last resort...)
