Day 9: A character you wish we’d seen more of
365 DC Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
August 5th - Rick Flag
Richard Montgomery Flag Senior was a captain in the United States Army who led a specialized company of soldiers during The Second World War. Due to the extreme danger of the missions this team went on, and the high number of casualties it frequently endured, the unit was given the ghoulish nickname ‘The Suicide Squad.’ Captain Flag continued to lead the squad throughout the war. After the war, he married Sharon Race and the two had a son who they named Richard Flag Junior. Captain Flag was asked to serve as a commander of Task Force X as part of a covert special operations unit to address unconventional threats. Flag continued to lead the Suicide Squad and perished sacrificing himself in order to destroy the terrible weapon known as The War Wheel.
Many years later, Captain Flag’s son, Rick Flag Jr., was tapped by Amanda Waller to act as the field leader for a new iteration of Task Force X. This version created a new Suicide Squad that utilized incarcerated super villains to act as agents in exchange for reduced prison sentences. Flag was not in favor of the plan and bristled at the idea of trying to make soldiers out of super villains, yet he nonetheless dutifully accepted the assignment.
Flag would go on to lead the new Suicide Squad on various missions. One of the foes the Squad faced off against was a group of terrorists called ‘The Jihad’ led by a villain known as Rustam. This Jihad had based themselves in a former nazi stronghold in South America called Jotunheim. Flag triggered a prototype atomic bomb within Jotunheim, destroying Rustam and his Jihad and dying in the process. Flag returned some time later having somehow survived the explosion.
A version of Rick Flag Jr. featured in episodes of the television series Smallville portrayed by actor Ted Whittall; while actor Joel Kinnaman has played the character in the first and second Suicide Squad movies.
Rick Flag Sr. first appeared in the pages of The Brave and the Bold #25 (1959): whereas Rick Flag Jr. first appeared in Legends #1 (1986).

Season 2: Déjà Vu
Without a lot of options at her disposal, Cat is forced to consult her father in the interest of saving Vincent. This scene brought the season around full circle. Season 2 of Beauty and the Beast started with Agent Reynolds (Ted Whittall) being a guiding force in the events occurring and in a roundabout way, it also ended with him doing the same. Cat and her father’s relationship may not be on the mend, but for what it’s worth, he seems to have grown more amiable toward Cat’s choice in men (especially given that putting his favor behind Gabe didn’t work out quite the way he had planned). Catherine mentions Vincent is not getting more beastly and Bob acknowledges Vincent may be the exception to the beast-rule or that perhaps her love has kept him from turning into a monster, just as Rebecca had done for Alistair. Catherine rolls her eyes. In the end, Bob repeats his usual speech. He is basically saying that when a beast loses its “humanity” he can’t go back.
