Tellervo Lumity
Screenshot redraw. Plz follow me.
I just watched this enchanting animated short film called ‘Tellervo’ (absolutely recommend it is so pretty and intriguing) and it reminded me of a trope that is used a lot but seldom used to its best effect: Hunters going turncoat. Many series and shows from She Ra to Star Wars to like 70% of YA dystopian fiction.
People whose goals are to destroy the other faction only to realise some things and change sides. But it seems almost without fail these stories always do this by making the protagonist’s previous faction look much worse, whilst presenting the rebels or the other faction as always being good guys who you just lacked perspective on.
What Tellervo does differently though, and what I like about it, is neither faction is inherently malicious, and the protagonist gets to see the flaws and strengths of both sides of the fence before she finally chooses her side:
The townsfolk just want to be able to hunt and procure resources without the threat of the “druid” (for lack of a better term) killing many of their people. The druid on the other hand just wants to protect the forest from harm, and only seems to retaliate against bloodshed by doing no more than making things even (ie using her magic to transform a hunter into a deer after that hunter slew a deer)
More interestingly, seeing this harsh truth of things knocks the protagonist out of their infatuation with the druid (at least for a moment), to the point she heads back to her town and strongly considers rejoining her previous faction (who think her dead).
So that in the end, when she is brought to a situation that requires her to choose between the druid’s life, or the life of one of her townsfolk, she can weigh the odds, and actually decide on a choice.
This kind of minimum fault nuance is just soooooo good in fiction, and paired with the exceptional art of this animation is a wonderful media experience. Love it.
