Day 2

We started our Saturday by making a batch of fudge for a going away party we’re attending tomorrow for the senior missionaries in the ward. We experimented with marshmallows instead of marshmallow fluff like we usually use, and it took so long for them to melt that the fudge got grainy. Definitely not party quality, but it’s too late to make more and we promised to bring some.
While the fudge cooled my husband and I found a babysitter and took a much needed trip to the temple. It was so nice to go with just him, and so peaceful. I love going to the temple, and never regret my time spent there.
Now that we’re home I’ve got laundry in the wash and it’s time to exercise! Since it’s so late I’m just going to do the stairclimber (aka just go up and down the front porch steps at a brisk pace) for 5 to 10 minutes. Wish me luck!

What We Did This Weekend: Winter Quarters

If you read this blog much, you know that Brookie and I attend the temple once a month. We used to just plan on attending on the third Saturday of each month, but then I was called as a seminary teacher and third Saturdays are now reserved for inservice (training) meetings. So lately we just fit our monthly temple trip into whatever Saturday works best. This Saturday the youth at church had a trip planned to the Winter Quarters temple. And, since Brooke is the president of the Young Women, we both went along and used it as our temple Saturday. It seems like most every time we visit the Winter Quarters temple in Omaha, NE we do so in the dead of winter. I'm pretty sure that it's open in the summer too, but I could be wrong. When we first moved to Kansas City, we attended Winter Quarters more than the temple in St. Louis because the trip didn't take as long. But over time we've completely flipped that pattern. Now we go to St. Louis more often than not. I like the drive better because it's just straight across Missouri, and we always seem to run into bad weather near Mound City whenever we drive to Omaha. There are definitely more places to eat in St. Louis than in Omaha (especially right off the freeway). And because Omaha is a small temple, you have to call in and schedule an appointment. In St. Louis, we can just show up and do some work. Things are so different for the youth of our ward than they were for me growing up. One of those differences is their temple attendance. These youth sacrifice an entire Saturday to worship in the House of the Lord. When I was in high school it was not uncommon for me and some friend to get up early and go to the temple (either Jordan River or Salt Lake) before school. Looking back, I can see how lucky we were to have a temple so nearby. Soon we will have a temple in Kansas City, and we couldn't be more excited. It will be about 25 minutes from where we live now. Construction has not started yet, but knowing that our children will grow up in the shadow of a temple makes us happy. The peace and love of the Spirit of God is so strong in those holy buildings. We look forward to each month's trip when we have a chance to visit, to recharge, and to take some of that Spirit home with us. Living not-so-close to the temple has helped us gain a deeper appreciation of its power and influence in our lives. It can be so tempting to take it for granted when you have a temple in your city. It will be a challenge not to do so when our Kansas City temple is built, but it's a challenge that we're really looking forward to. So, yeah, this weekend was our temple trip. What We Did This Weekend: Another Temple Trip

This weekend was our monthly temple trip. But before we get to the details of our road trip, we had date night on Friday. Some good friends invited us over for some hot chocolate, doughnuts, and some quality conversation time Friday night. Before heading over to their house, we stopped at Panera Bread for dinner. Brookie tried the new white cheddar macaroni and cheese, and highly recommends it. In fact, she liked it so much that she wanted to eat their again while we were in St. Louis. There were a few things of note that happened on Saturday. The temple is always noteworthy, but seldom is it fodder for our blog. Because I wasn't especially thrilled to eat at Panera Bread two consecutive days (even if it's not really called Panera in St. Louis), I needed to suggest a strong alternative. Café Rio sounded good. Too bad the closest one to us is 945 miles away (actually, since we were in St. Louis, it was more like 1,177 miles– not exactly "on the way home" from the temple). But we remembered a place that was similar to Café Rio called Qdoba, where we'd stopped once before. Just like last week at Zepi's, we were all by ourselves at Qdoba. After looking at the menu and deciding on our lunches, we were excited. However, the lovely Lunch Lady in training behind the counter that took our orders and dished up our food saw to it that our excitement was fleeting. I capitalize Lunch Lady because, in my mind at least, it's a proper noun. We're talking about The Lunch Lady. Not just anyone that works on the food staff at a school. You know the one. And I say she was in training because she was probably only 19 or 20. So, anyway, she asks Brooke what she wanted and started to dish it up. She didn't smile at all, just grabbed the spoon in the type of food she wanted and "slop," threw it into her bowl. Grabbed the next spoon. Slop. "You want black or pinto beans?" Slop. "What kind of meat do you want with that?" Slop. Getting my order of nachos was every bit as painful to watch. At Café Rio your tastebuds get excited the second you're there– even before you park sometimes. Then, as it gets closer and closer to your turn to order, you really start to salivate. I've never become less enthused about my meal as they've dished it up. Quite the opposite, really. The anticipation only builds as they construct my shredded chicken salad, holding the cilantro. But at Qdoba on Saturday, Lunch Lady made sure that any anticipation we had for our lunch was replaced with feelings of guilt for having been such an inconvenience to her. Our meals were really good. But food is so much less appetizing when it's slopped. We made our monthly stop at the outlet stores in Warrenton, MO too. We went to GAP again, but this time, it wasn't for us. This time we were trying to buy clothes for the Boy. It was harder than I thought it would be. I was having trouble deciding on anything. After all, what we bought could end up influencing his style for years to come. The last thing we want is for him to end up on some show like "What Not to Wear." We did buy a few things, now we just hope that he'll look good in them. And that's what we did this weekend! Go to the board!

What We Did This Weekend:Temple Trip with Friends

So by now you should all come to expect the monthly blog about our trip to the temple. For the most part, this blog is about our weekend adventures (since our weekly adventures are light on the "adventure" and heavy on the "weak"), and when the closest temple requires over seven hours of driving, it naturally becomes the highlight of that weekend. We've made the offer many times to many friends. If you haven't heard the offer, here it is: We'll gladly watch your kids while you attend a session in the temple if you hang around and wait for us. Better yet, if there's room, we could even carpool. Many of our friends find it difficult to attend the temple because they don't know what to do with their kids. They feel it would be a burden to leave them home with family and friends for almost ten hours. But you don't have to leave them home. Bring them along. Come with us and we'll play with them while you're in the temple. And then when you're through and we're in the temple, you'll have a great chance to teach your kids about the temple and to help them come to love the house of the Lord and to look forward to the day when they can enter and serve as well. This weekend some of our friends finally took us up on the offer and it was awesome. Since our ward's "Halloween Party" was Saturday evening, we had two choices: We could either get up really, really early Saturday morning to be able to be back in time, or we could spend Friday night in St. Louis at a hotel. The great deals at Hotwire.com made the sleep-over option possible. After work on Friday our friends picked us up. We threw our bags in the back of their vehicle and hopped in the back seat next to their little baby girl who would be our tiny travel companion for the trip. We stopped for dinner in Columbia at Applebee's (you already know what we had), then continued on to the Holiday Inn near the airport in the St. Louis area. By the time we arrived it was pretty late, so we went straight to bed. The funny thing about teaching early morning seminary is that 6:30am is considered sleeping in. So, after "sleeping in" we ran down to the fitness center for a quick 30 minutes of cardio (I know. We're freaks.) before showering and meeting up with our friends at 7:30am. The temple was only about 15 minutes from our hotel. Our friends went in for the 8:15 session and left us with their daughter who, lucky for us, was awake and as cute as ever. It was just us in the waiting area next to the Distribution Center for the first 30 minutes. Then other people starting to show up. The longer we were there, the more the kids in the room began to outnumber the adults. Our friends were back from their session in no time, and then we took our turn in the temple. Two stops on our way home (St. Louis Bread Company for lunch and the Outlet mall in Warrenton for shopping) put us back in Kansas City by about 6:40pm. The ward party started at 6:00pm, so Brookie and I put on our Apple Genius costumes, put our trunk-or-treat candy in a bowl and left for the Stake Center. We got there in time for dinner, some friendly visiting, and the trunk-or-treat. We were too busy this year to be able to do anything fun with our trunk, but we had a fun time regardless. As usual, there was a chili contest and our favorite turned out to be the winner of "Most Healthy" (go figure), and it wasn't even chili. It was taco soup. And we want the recipe. And that's what we did this weekend!

What We Did This Weekend: Disco Night... Somewhere in Middle America

I can't really blame anyone if they don't catch the Counting Crows reference in the title, but anyway... Rather than go on a normal date night which might involve an upscale eating establishment like Applebee's or Waldo Pizza, followed by either an episode of Psych or whatever we most recently received from Netflix, we decided to take a quick trip to Omaha. My plan started about a month ago. After being intrigued by Chris "Disco" Hayes' sub-80mph-submarine-stylings on the mound for the Omaha Royals (the AAA Class minor league affiliate of the Kansas City Royals), I decided that I had to try to see him pitch in person.* And, as the Winter Quarters temple is in Omaha, I could easily suggest that we tack on a baseball game to our monthly temple trip. Eventually we determined that we would leave work early Friday, attend a late-afternoon session at the temple, drive to the ballpark for a game, and then drive home to Kansas City. It made for a very long day, but one we won't soon forget. In order for this story to make sense, you should probably read Disco's post about the day he was promoted from AA to AAA, aptly entitled: Promotions, Payback, and Poop Sticks. With our trip to Omaha nearing, I started to wonder whether we should buy tickets ahead of time, or if there would be seats left for us to buy on gameday when we arrived at the ballpark. I had an idea to email Disco and ask him what attendance was like and if he thought we'd be okay buying tickets at the gate. But, when I hadn't heard back from him by Wednesday, my paranoia won out and I bought seats online. Then, Friday morning we received a reply from Mr. Disco himself. I was thrilled that he had taken the time to send a quick note. He said that he hoped we would be able to make it to the game and that he would like us to come down to the dugout to say hi if we were there early enough. He also added, to "avoid a potentially awkward situation," he only signs brand new plungers. Well, that pretty much settled things. Although I was a little taken aback by his stance on active-duty plungers, I made up my mind to find a brand new plunger for him to sign. When we arrived at the stadium, we had a chance for a Kindness Surprise before the game. It turns out that we had a pair of extra tickets. Not wanting them to go unused, we zeroed in on a father and his young son that got in line for some tickets. We asked if it was just the two of them that would be attending the game that night, and when he said yes, we explained that we had these two extra tickets that were really good seats (turns out the seats we gave away were better than the seats we kept) and that we would like to give them to him. He graciously and excitedly accepted the tickets, asked my name, and thanked me. Kindness Surprises make you feel good. When we got to our seats, Mr. Disco was nowhere to be found. We had only managed to arrive 30 minutes early, so I figured that unless we were able to find him after the game, I would be going home with an unsigned plunger. But then, about 10 minutes before the first pitch, I saw him signing some autographs along the third base line, just past their dugout. Brookie and I grabbed our stuff and headed that way. It felt like everyone was staring at us (okay, at me) because of the plunger I was carrying. But before we could make it to where he had been giving his autograph to kids in the stands, he had left and was on his way to the bullpen further down the foul line, where the seats had been sectioned off. Somewhat undeterred, Brookie and I sat in some seats at the far end of the open sections closest to the bullpen, and I watched for Mr. Disco to look our way. When it looked like he was looking in our general direction, I raised the brand new plunger above my head and waved it. This caught his attention and elicited a big smile, and he heading back down our way while we went down to the first row of seats to say hello. When he got close enough to be able to talk with us he said, still grinning, "You must be Todd." I acknowledged, said hello, and then he looked at Brookie and said, "And you must be Brooke." I was impressed. Not only did he know my name, but he also took the time to learn and remember my wife's name. I handed him the plunger and the Sharpie and he signed it for me. We even had another fan take our picture as proof. Maybe you knew some baseball players in high school or college. If so, please accept my apologies, as many of them may be accurately described as 'jerks.' In my playing days I always maintained that I was not a baseball player; I just happened to play baseball. And maybe that's why I admire Disco Hayes. Actually that's only one reason, but it's a big one. He seemed to me to be much more than just a spoiled jerk in a baseball uniform. And after our "Disco Encounter" I'm even more convinced that he's more than just a baseball player. He was extremely nice. And genuine. And what really impressed me was that he seemed glad to have met us. Even though the game was going to start, a fact I was conscious of, along with the idea that he was at work and we were interrupting, he was the one making conversation. He asked about our trip up to Omaha. He had followed a link in my email signature and come across my makeshift online portfolio and asked about one of the pieces. Then, seeing that Brookie had her scorebook in hand, asked if she would like him to sign it. He was about to sign it big and in the middle of a page, and then thought to ask if she was going to keep score, which she was, so he signed it down in one corner instead. Brookie hoped he had been impressed that she knew how to keep score. Anyway, I can't really say enough nice things about this decent man following his dreams who happens to pitch for the Omaha Royals. He was a bright spot in what turned out to be a bit of a tough weekend for us (which will have to wait for another post). The home team lost that night. Disco didn't pitch. But we still had a great time. The ride home after the game was highlighted by our attempt at eating a pizza we picked up at Old Chicago in Omaha. It's tough enough to eat hot, cheesy pizza, covered with pepperoni, while driving on the interstate. It's even harder when the large pizza is only sliced six ways making each piece very large. It was messy. It was funny. And it was very, very good. We were somehow able to make it home without me falling asleep. We were back in our cozy bed by 2:30am and didn't wake up Saturday morning until 10:00am. And that's what we did this weekend! Go to the board!

Story time!

When we got to Salt Lake City we went and saw the conference building. On the sidewalk that goes beside it there's a little stream with plants growing, it was beautiful! I've never seen such a thing. And the Conference center has a waterfall! So we go inside and this thing is MASSIVE! and it's just the hallway! We got a little tour of the building and got to see the actual conference room. It seats 21,000 (I don't think that includes the tabernacle choir or the speakers). At the far end is the organ, I've seen it hundreds of times on TV but seeing it in real life made it seem so much bigger. Over the podium are Broadway status lights, a giant GIANT speaker, and a skylight (which was closed because they were getting ready for a broadcast) afterwords we were lead back into the hall and were taken upstairs to look at the original artwork they had in the building, and then finally the roof.

On the roof is a huge garden, and a whole bunch of fountains (and streams and things) The lady leading us around told us that they have quite a bit of wildlife in the garden... she'd seen a duck and 8 ducklings, a little bunch of quail, a squirrel... and even rabbits! (they get up and down the outdoor staircase) At that point it was time for us to go to the temple.

Let me just say this... I thought the Albuquerque temple was nice. ;-; The Salt Lake City one was BEAUTIFUL!! o_o and kind of magical...

;-; I couldn't wear any fancy with my dress for the temple wedding thingie, but that was okay. After we got out of the temple I put on my sparkly ribbon and choker and took some pictures out by the flowers and in front of the temple and I was happy.

We also checked out the Museum, Tabernacle, ... other... museum ish... building... thing, and a smaller building that didn't look very mormon at all. XD

I was kind of amazed to see actual tourists around. All from different countries, and most of them not even mormon. -_- I got a new question asked about the church, someone had seen my long hair and asked if it was tradition to do so. I said no, it was my personal preference nothing more. I also got stopped by a Japanese missionary and my husband was kind enough to out me for speaking Japanese. So that was interesting... I wish I wasn't as shy as I am. ;-; The ordeal would have felt less awkward.

Welp, anyway... we went and got dinner, and made one last swing back around the temple to get some night pictures. (Very pretty!!) and then headed home.

XD at the restaurant there was this guy who got up every 5 minutes and refilled his plate with all the chicken wings. If the chicken wings hadn't been replenished he'd grab some fruit and return a little while later. It was ridiculous.

So yeah, the trip home was pretty uneventful too... well... except we stopped at the mall and some guy selling hair straighteners tried to sell one to me. He straightened a strand of my hair and curled another one and I was like "Oh look, that's what my hair'd look like if I had brushed it today... and that curl is pretty but it'll be gone in an hour :C" I tried to politely explain that I couldn't afford it and I'd never use it (being so low maintenance that I'm lucky my hair gets done at all) ... I ended up kind of offending him and just kinna wanted to crawl under a rock at that point. Sorry but $300 for a hair straightener? ... and then trying to sell me 3 for half the price of one... that just makes me feel like a thief really. (I know there's a lot of people like 'DUDE! Why didn't you!!!' Sorry. Nope. If I want something I'll pay the price of the item. I'm not the kind of person to take advantage of that situation.)

Other than that nothing really happened. I spent a lot of the trip sleeping, watched some anime, and that's pretty much it. :) I had a lot of fun though! Got lots of awesome pictures! It was an awesome experience.
