Can I ask what sign language Dario uses again? I think you’ve mentioned before that he’s mute in your Wish!AU. Is it Russian or German? I can’t remember unfortunately, sorry 😅
(Also, is there a reference you use when drawing characters who use sign language? Sorry if this sounds dumb.)
Hi Flicker! No problem, I don’t think I clarified this earlier— this doesn’t sound dumb at all!
I found this ask in my drafts hidden in the dump but here is what I wrote before:
So. I didn’t exactly put too much thought behind Dario’s sign. He is mute (as is Dopey), and I originally drew him using BSL or ASL. But this ask got me thinking, and I explored a few different sign language options and narrowed them down to these two:
1. There’s obviously ASL. Disney is an American brand, so it would make sense that their character would use American Sign. (Wait. In other countries, do they just reanimate everything?)
2. There’s also SSL, as Rosas is a Spanish country.
I really wasn’t sure what to draw Dario using, but as this is a visual comic over Tumblr. But I think I’m going with American Sign.
Now, however, as I’m now (like five months late 😭) in Sign-101, I’ll probably be using ASL as that’s what I’m learning. I would love to do SSL if possible, but since I'm not familiar with the language, I won't be drawing SSL most of the time. I don't want to make an error as they're very easy to do in sign.
As for references, it’s mainly just what I’m learning from my professors. ASL Gloss is the grammar structure used for word arrangement in sign, but I want to figure out a way to incorporate gifs in my comics if I ever need Dario to fingerspell anything. He’d probably give sign names to his friends (and the king and queen probably have one, Asha too) so I might figure that out. But I am not deaf, and only deaf people should give out sign names, so I’ll have to do some more research.
For words I don’t know it’s mainly Google 😅 I try to cross-reference multiple sources to make sure what I’m drawing is generally correct
OKAYYYYY. @your-ne1ghbor, I love you for these wonderful questions. Tumblr, FUCK YOU FOR DELETING THIS DRAFT FOUR TIMES.
Ahem. I swear if this deletes again I’m going to stab something. Maybe Asha’s parents.
Anyways, I’m going to break this up for easier comprehension.
Light versus dark magic
This is going to be quicker because if this deletes again I SWEAR I’M SCREAMING buuuuut, at first I thought about doing light v dark magic like @oh-shtars, with dark magic being the same, but quicker and at a cost.
Then I thought about how Stars work in the TFS universe.
And I decided that magic comes from emotions. The stronger the emotion, the more powerful the spell. If magic is casted with good intentions and reaps good consequences, it’s considered light magic.
For example! Magnus taking the wishes of Rosas. He has good intentions— keeping them safe— and reaps good consequences— Stars don’t attack and kill them. Thus, light magic.
A good example of dark magic would be Maleficent cursing baby Aurora. Bad intentions— jealousy, bitterness— with bad consequences— death of an innocent child. So it’s dark magic.
The use of dark magic warps its wielder. Magic is a living thing, it breathes and lives in every living thing. But dark magic, full of ill intent, can poison its user and make their heart dark. It also curses their appearance, whether it be slow or fast, slowly corrupting them.
That's my hc on why a lot of Disney villains don't look human. I'm scrapping the idea of "bad guys based off of queer people bc being gay = bad" and changing it to this because I said so
A good example of the distinction between the two would be Elsa's magic. When she's happy and safe, she uses light magic.
However... her fear. It’s too powerful of an emotion to be handled with light magic. The only way to contain it is via jagged, sharp icicles of dark magic.
Therefore, her striking Anna in the heart was dark magic.
Bad consequences, bad emotions, "bad" magic.
I truly think if Anna had died, Elsa would’ve succumbed to dark magic and become the Snow Queen from the original tale.
So why does Maggy take the wishes?
Magnus uses magic for two things:
To maintain the barrier around Rosas
To take people’s wishes and turn them into wish orbs
Both of these things are to protect Rosas from attacking Stars. I went into it a bit here, but Stars can sense ungranted wishes. Taking those wishes and storing them away prevents Stars from seeing them and attacking. But just in case, a barrier surrounds Rosas, tinting the sky a beautiful pastel purple.
It’s been established Magnus has light magic. He’s keeping his people safe, giving them shelter and a chance to have a good, unbiased Wishgranter.
Surely taking people’s wishes, no matter the intent, is still okay! Taking their drive and spark doesn’t make them feel as if something is missing from their life! This has no bad consequences whatsoever!
Do Magnus and Amaya hate the stars? Why?
It’s… complicated.
For Magnus, at least.
He didn’t have the most lavish life before the Stars. He had a small circle and liked it that way. He wasn’t the best person, but he did what needed to be done.
Then the Stars attacked, and killed the only one he cared for.
But still, Magnus knows that without that incident, he never would’ve met Asha or Amaya, and never would’ve founded Rosas and saved so many other people from experiencing the same grief he has. The Stars deserve no love or empathy, but if he could rewrite time, he… wouldn’t.
Amaya, on the other hand? Definitely. She had a big family, with lots of siblings and nieces and nephews. She left them all to pursue her dreams of potion making, and came back to not a village, but a pile of ash.
There weren’t even any bodies left to bury.
She hates them.
Can Amaya do magic as well?
Magic may be in every being, but only a few can naturally harness it. Magnus’ magic capabilities were passed down generationally (ha), while Amaya’s wasn’t. But she studied magic, and to make potions work, you have to understand the magic in them.
However, she can cast a simple fire or levitation spell in a pinch.
Did they ever teach Asha any form of magic?
Asha is also one of the people who has to learn magic in order to master it. However, magic is a fickle thing and doesn’t like her intentions. But Asha has a workaround! Surely, when she turns eighteen, she can just wish to become a great sorceress!
Do you think Asha is becoming an official and line-up of Disney Princesses?
Regarding the canon Disney movie— I think so. She’s Disney’s 100th anniversary protagonist, so she’s bound to get some merch sold, even if the movie was lackluster. I saw somewhere that she would even go ahead of Mirabel for her turn in the Disney princess lineup, so… I guess Mirabel gets shoved aside for many things.
Regarding my rewrite, she’s already a princess, so of course she’d be in the official lineup. She’d… probably throw a fit if she wasn’t, tbh
Hey hey hey!! Guess who’s turn it is to shoot you with asks >:))
1. Is Evangeline going to have a bigger role in the story than it seems? Or is she just mentioned here and there?
2. Are the black hole forms of Cielo and Evangeline going to have a role in your story? 👀 Or was it just for fun?
3. Who would you reckon would warm up first to Asha’s development and redemption? I have a feeling Gabo would be the last 😅
4. Which Magnifico from the Wishverse would TFS!Mag be more concerned of? (Considering he’s the only good apple there thus far…)
5. You said Cielo was pulled from the sky by force. Does Evangeline know about this and how does she feel? How does Cielo think of this situation of being away from his mentor/mother-figure?
6. Damn 14 songs-?! That’s an amazing number 😂. Are they all going to be of equal length or are some songs shorter than the others?
7. Is Valentino going to talk at some point in your story?
8. Does Asha keep anything in memory of her village and parents? Or does she prefer to bury her feelings deep down and not think about it? (Don’t tell her I asked this. She has enough beef with me already 😅)
9. Did Magnifico and Amaya start the myth of how Wishing Stars are evil? If not, who started it? How long had the stars refused to help humans?
10. Nothing really. Just have a hug from me <33
(You don’t have to draw any responses to these btw. I heard you’ve had plenty on your plate already 💖)
YAY LET’S GO! THANK YOU FLICKER! I’m not going to draw anything because I have class today, but I’m super excited to answer these so I want to get this as quick as I can haha
Is Evangeline going to have a bigger role on the story than she seems? Or is she just mentioned here and there?
She’s going to be in… let me check… four chapters?
She’s definitely playing a big role. Her being there is the reason that Mag and Amaya go evil
Are the black hole forms of Cielo and Evangeline going to be in your story?
Uh, heck yeah! Although I did some work on the types of stars in the TFS universe last night, and these are my notes:
Protostars are newborn ones, born of an Act of True Love
Red Giants are stars who have given into “granting whatever wishes for power”
Blue Stars are True Wishing Stars
Black holes are those who sang the Hurt Incantation
Neutron stars are healed stars, but still affected
Binary stars are stars in a close relationship
PMS (pre-magic-stars) stars are stars before they gain sentience
There will be one Red Giant and one Black Hole in The Fallen Star. I’m sure you can figure out who is who
Who would you reckon would warm up first to Asha's development and redemption?
I assume you’re talking about the seven teens. If so, I think Dario would be the first, simply because he can see through her bullshit.
I thought Gabo would be the last too, but Hal would really be the final teen to actually accept Asha. She acts like she does, but she can’t really acknowledge the bitterness she feels towards Asha for not helping her Saba. Gabo’s just the loudest about it.
Which Magnifico from the Wishverse would TFS!Mag be more concerned of?
Uhhhhh— I don’t think TKoRaT Mag, because he too has an Asha daughter. It’s sort of hard to eliminate the rest.
KOW!Mag dropped Asha off a building. RWTS!Mag is a manipulator.
But I honestly think RFTS!Mag. He’s destroying his marriage. To think that any variation of himself doesn’t value his love for Amaya over his love for power is… very concerning.
How do Cielo and Evangeline feel about Cielo being pulled to Rosas?
Oh, Eva was freaking out at first. Her curious son just got sucked into a Star-hating kingdom like a vacuum. But she can’t externally combust, as she’s already not of the highest standing in the star realm.
What happens until she appears in the story is basically a “Hell is Forever”-esque argument with the stars in charge to let her go and rescue him. Who knows if that works out or not.
Cielo… honestly, he was like Ariel coming to land. Sure, he was a bit off-put by the new world, but quickly became distracted by the wonders of humans. He knew Eva would be watching him and freaking out, so the best they could do was find his Wisher and work on becoming a true wishing star like Eva taught him.
Are the songs going to be equal length?
Oh, haha no. I would die.
“Welcome to Rosas” is one of the shorter ones. It’s… yeah.
I have one that’s like… twenty seconds aloud? “At All Costs” is longer, but “This Wish (Reprise)” is visually more panels. Same as the rewrite of “I’m a Star” and one other secret song.
Is Valentino going to talk at some point in your story?
Yeah! He’s voiced by Ravi Cabot-Conyers and gets a voice… sometime after the rewrite for IAS. I haven’t exactly pinned a certain point.
But he’s very talkative! He loves Asha and Cielo and while I have to establish his voice regarding Magma’s reactions and the seven teens’, I do know that Asha has had to tackle her therapy goat before he blabbed something to Cielo she doesn’t want them hearing.
Does Asha keep anything in memory of her village and parents? Or does she prefer to bury her feelings deep down and not think about it?
Don’t worry, she can’t hear you. She’s busy insulting Gabo for his height in
✨song form✨
Asha… well, she was twelve when her parents died. So it’s been five years at the start of the story. She remembers being happy, and being loved. She remembers making couscous with Sakina and climbing trees with Tómas.
Her memory of that night is fuzzy. All she remembers is being trapped under flaming rubble, someone saving her and throwing her out, and a tall figure with glowing eyes and floating hair.
She prefers to think of the good stuff. What will be.
Did Magnifico and Amaya start the myth of how Wishing Stars are evil? If not, who started it? How long had the stars refused to help humans?
So, Magnus and Amaya didn’t start the myth. It’s not really a myth, either. For around a hundred years, Stars changed from assisting people with their wishes to straight-up granting them. In turn, people became lazy and started depending too much on the Red Giants, and overpowered them, the magic turning dark and corrupting their minds.
They began searching for more wishes to grant and more power to absorb, bursting into villages to find the ungranted wishes. Eventually, people saw that the stars became dangerous, but some people still wanted their wishes granted, and so more stars fell.
Magnus and Amaya’s homes and families were both taken by Stars. So they decided to do something about it.
Hugging you back!
Thank you so much for these questions, Flicker! <333
@spectator-zee Cielo is going to be the main reason Asha’s character arc happens. But Asha will also be the reason Cielo’s arc happens
While Asha is shown the good in people and how they don’t actually all suck and aren’t all stupid, Cielo is shown how sometimes, life isn’t that great. People betray your trust. Bad things happen. Loved ones get hurt.
Sometimes, you can’t just greet the world with open arms. Because then you get pancakes
Anyways 😇
Cielo is sort of like Giselle in that way, witnessing real life. And, like Ariel, actually in-person
His relationship with Evangeline is sort of like a mother/son dynamic, with Eva raising them most of their life. Stars nowadays think they’re better than humans, these weak little ants who need their help to do everything. Humans believed this too, overly relying on Stars and making them all-powerful.
Eva was one of the only Stars to still believe in helping humans achieve their wish. As a result, she’s looked down on by other Stars, and less people believe in her so she’s less powerful.
Cielo was a dwarf star, barely noticeable, very weak. Evangeline sort of took him under her wing (quite literally) and raised them with the belief that a true Wishing Star is born to help others achieve their dreams.
So Cielo is sort of shunned too. He spends most of his free time observing humans and watching them. This one kingdom catches his attention a lot. A kingdom of wishes (ayyyy) where a barrier keeps its people from wishing on stars.
But one day, an explosion happens and a vortex sucks Cielo inside said kingdom. He’s pulled towards something, someone, then crashes into a house in his little star form, not ready to be pulled to Earth yet.
A short young man chases him away, and traps him inside a little house while he yells for his friends.
So @your-ne1ghbor made this post which included how their royal couple and Asha would interact with other AU’s royal couple and Asha, and I wanted to chat a bit about the TFS part :3
TFS!Mag would be angry at TKORAT!Mag. How could he do exactly what the Stars did to him? Not love Asha with everything in him? Not exhaust himself trying to protect his family?
Secretly, he hates TKORAT!Mag so much because he’s terrified that he may become him some day. Turn to dark magic, turn to the Stars and take their torture methods, then turn it back on them. Who cares if people get hurt along the way? All that matters is justice.
TFS!Amaya would feel more sadness for TKORAT!Amaya. After all, TFS!Amaya also lost her family. She also left behind her parents and many siblings, and returned home not to her family but to a pile of ashes blown away by the wind.
Besides, TFS!Amaya was lucky enough not to lose an eye to the Stars yet who said that
Amaya isn’t as scared of becoming TKORAT!Amaya. She thinks it’s somewhat justified. And if she was still a caring mother and wife and queen… what was so wrong with that?
TFS!Asha, yes, would be surprised that TKORAT!Asha knows magic. TFS!Asha can’t master it for the life of her. And TKORAT!Asha is so… weak. And pathetic. She eats wishes, so she’s just as bad as her parents, just as bad as the Stars, so of course TFS!Asha must hate her too.
Except… TFS!Asha sees herself in TKORAT!Asha. A scared, desperate girl who does bad things to be closer to her family. It reminds TFS!Asha of who she could’ve been.
Basically, TFS!Asha thinks that TKORAT!Asha is sad, and pathetic. But she also sees herself in her, and she hates that. So try as she might to avoid and spite TKORAT!Asha, TFS!Asha does treat TKORAT with a bit of… softness.
Edit: forgot to add Cielo’s part, but yes, he and Star are best friends
Hiiii! I was gonna post this under your question about Asha in your AU, but I wanted to send a more personal one here.
As someone who was inspired by your rewrite, I think Princess Asha is a great take! (Definitely has more personality) Its hilarious how she's like Kuzco and she works great with Cielo! I never found her to be a stereotype when reading it, I always considered her to be a more arrogant version of Canon Asha, since a lot people considered her to be a jerk. 😂 (But I can understand your concern)
Part of what I was most worried about in my rewrite was if I made Asha interesting enough compared Star being a ball of energy and she's the opposite. I wasn't sure if I made her boring or not as interesting compared to other AUs or characters in Wish Granted. I just had the idea of making Asha the only sane person while everyone else is kind of eccentric or crazy would be funny contrast. (Like with Shrek being normal compared to the other characters) So hearing you found her backstory compelling and love her sarcasm with Star made me so happy!
Princess Asha is hilarious, she's got sass, there's great banter with the Teens (calling them by their dwarf names was perfect) she's got an interesting backstory, I LOVE WHEN SHE TALKS TO CIELO AND SHE HATES FEELINGS THINGS!!! 😂😂
Heck, I'm even amazed WG!Asha mostly gets along with her (which is hilarious) even though TFS!Asha was raised by the royals! And trust me, it takes time for WG!Asha to make friends in both my rewrite and the Wishverse! (Cause you know, trust issues due to trauma)
So anyways, I say keep writing the sassy princess! We love her even if she think we're peasants. 😅 (SHE KEEPS CALLING ME MUTT, WHYYYYY 😭)
Ahhhh thank you Rascal 😭
(The post Rascal is talking about is right here, if you're curious.)
The thing is, when I first watched Wish, I was a bit of a sheep in that whole "Asha is selfish, Magnifico was justified" train. But then I rewatched the movie and read other rewrites and thought about how I wanted to portray Disney in my rewrite, and I realized Wish just did a shitty job at making character motivations clear. Everyone is morally grey, which isn't necessarily a bad thing! But with how little time the movie devoted towards character arcs, it was for its own detriment
What I'm trying to do in The Fallen Star is make everyone's character arc clear, so I'm upping the extremes in their personalities. Asha was a young kid and didn't think about saving an entire kingdom by herself at first? TFS!Asha purposefully doesn't think about anyone except her family. Let her grow as a person by understanding other people's stories and letting others in.
Magnifico is scared of Stars because of some vague childhood trauma? Lean into that and make TFS!Mag see Stars almost kill his family so he believes he's justified in doing wrong, even if he knows it is! Let the dark magic corrupt his mind, make it a tragic story.
I was mainly worried that TFS!Asha would be too much, you know? The Sapphire stereotype that may have overshadowed her growth as a person. But I'm glad you and @oh-shtars never saw her that way! (If anyone else had, please let me know and tell me what you think I can do to improve Asha's character!)
