I was pondering something regarding RE chapter 53 and memory. Humans don't really "remember" events but recreate them in the moment. The human brain does not allow for memory to be "stored", instead it fires off neurons in a current. The more times you remember the event or "thing" the quicker the neurons are fired off. Less if you don't recall it as often. Now that the explanation is out of the way, when Kaneki lost his memories and adapted to the Haise persona it was likely as a result (cont)
(cont) of brain damage. Sort of like a semi blank slate where the currents were disrupted. Some currents were kept, others discarded, and other possibly suppressed. Now back to 53 where his memories came back its a result of the neurons once again firing off in a similar pattern to a past event. Namely when Kannae was starting to kick his head in. Its what is not said in TG that makes things horrifying. The assault is likely even comparable to what his mother did to him.
I am… quiet not sure what you are trying to say?
Memories are actually stored in the brain. That is a fact. Molecules, Macro-molecules, and neuronal circuits are crucial in the memory equation because they are the highway through which memories travel.
If you are interested in this field, I can recommend some textbooks you can read to grasp the concept further, even more I can assemble some scientific papers and reviews for you. I went through this in High school, College [both minor in Psychology, and BS in Biology ie Cognitive Psych and Neuroscienece], and during my MS in Molecular Genetics [how genomic rearrangements themselves influence neuronal circuits in the bran, leaving striking differences between one person and another]. The latter topic is especially difficult to grasp, but the most interesting!
Okay back to your question - and here I am trying to understand your ask [but probably failed]… there is no denying that Kaneki’s memory loss [amnesia] is due to brain damage. This is a fact the whole fandom is aware of.
As for you implying that Kanae’s assaults put things back on track because it re-established the “currents”, it’s more complicated than just that. It’s a contribution, but not the only reason, purely biologically speaking. Kaneki had already started getting back his memories before Kanae arrived on the scene, and in previous cases.
Furthermore, if you are hinting at the fact Kaneki’s mother abuse may have altered his “currents”... I wouldn’t compare her human assaults to Kanae’s ghoulish ones. And again.. things are more complicated than just that.
TG:re Volume 5 Extra Translation
※
Like mortar in a mixer Three heads, melted thickly
Miracles have been used up long ago and lie cold on the concrete
Killed I killed Have I killed?
I was losing my grasp on reality, when the eyes of the heads opened wetly like genitals, to say hello
The heads whispered in Mother's voice
"you" "you" "you"
"you" "how did you fool yourself into thinking you would be loved" "when you're so ugly"
"uoh........"
Gentle abuse, repeated over and over in "that box" The sky flickers, like traffic lights
Before I knew it, nine thorns sprang out from the chest cavity The diaphragm shivered, as if about to cry
(my body!)
I finally lost my grasp on reality, and I started climbing the steel tower The handrails I touched all turned black and rusted.
(I knew I was made of poison!) (No, it was that woman who was poison itself)
(climb, climb)
(not enough to die) (to a higher place, higher place, climb!)
※
The intestines of the dead, reaches out to the heavens from the tip of the steel tower.
The intestines were knotted together like rope. I desperately pulled the rope in.
squelch, squelch, squelch
The knot had grown long enough to reach the sun.
Tower of beloved corpses. With each pull I reach the peak, and the height increases. I cannot see the ground anymore.
The tower starts to shake widely, whispering in Mother's voice.
"automatic failure at happiness, shapeless spawn"
(ahh)
"My dear lost one"
"Your parents failed in raising you"
And I died.

Ishida's foreshadowing game is way too strong. Tarot #15 appearing on Kaneki/Haise in ch. 54? All too appropriate after Ui's mention of CCG car #15 to retrieve the bodies of Hairu and Kijima's fallen squads (ch. 53, p. 9), set side by side with Furuta.
(Haise’s 15 in TG:re 54 and breakdown of the card - x)
o.0 I didn’t even connect the two... So now we have to look at what the characters are saying too, not just the background numbers? Foreshadowing game too strong, it takes an entire fandom to even attempt to decode them. :o
I JUst READ THE NEW CHAPTER. IS KANEKI BACK?!!!!!!!!!! :'D
lol anon, you’ve missed out on a lot of meta if you’ve just read the chapter :’D. I know some people believe that Kaneki is back, but I’m going with the interpretation kenkamishiro already wrote here - (x) ^^
my friend just talked to me about a theory that kanekis mum might have killed his dad and the aunt knew and blackmailed her and so his mum was very stressed ... sounds ridiculous to me but what do you think?
After the reveal in TG:re 53 nothing seems too far-fetched in terms of Kaneki’s mother, but until we get more information that theory seems a little hasty. ^^
