ok um, top 5 reasons why I should read the Bartimaeus Trilogy?
This is my favorite question to get ever.
Morally gray characters who are forced to readjust their worldview when their idealism does not match reality, and they find themselves compromising their values in order to mold the world into what they want it to be. Every single character's arc is fabulous, and the relationships between all the characters just add new facets to those arcs.
Politicking in a corrupt (British) society, which involves a lot of spy networks, assassination plots, bureaucratic propaganda, and swashbuckling adventures in Prague.
Hilarity! Bartimaeus's narration especially is absolutely hilarious. Everything he says is just dripping with sarcasm, but he often ends up making a fool of himself, too. You will never look at a footstool the same way again.
Heartbreak! There shouldn't be an exclamation point there. This series will rip you apart. The stakes are higher in each book mainly because the characters increasingly lose sight of who they are - so it's not just that the plots are bigger, it's that you can see them changing before your eyes, and you want to stop it, but you can't, you just have to wait for them to have some kind of epiphany, and oh God, why are they hurting each other, why can't everything just work out, oh my God no no no no why are there tears??
Really good magic worldbuilding is always a plus because so many fantasy series are just not very well thought-out. But Bartimaeus has a very rich world that marries interesting characters, believable and complicated politics, and a fascinating interplay between magicians and the spirits they control. You discover more about the world with each book, and I think it just all flows so smoothly.
