Sweet on sweet on sweet…came hungry and BBQ chicken with rice sounded good. I figured anything BBQ was a house special. The menu had many options for appetizers, curry, salads, veg dishes, seafood, fried rice, noodles, etc. The food arrived quickly. I ordered it to go and they didn’t provide napkins or utensils.

BBQ chicken (kai yang) dinner ($13): Half a BBQ chicken served with shrimp fried rice and house special BBQ honey sauce. The fried rice was plentiful and came with two shrimp (big ones), onions and eggs. It had an orange hue and sweet flavor. I’m used to fried rice with more veggies. The sweetness was okay but then the BBQ chicken was sweet too. The chicken was moist, tender, and had a grilled charred flavor with a sweet sauce. It came with a container of sweet sauce.

Thai iced tea: Very sweet…

The restaurant looks a few decades old with dated diner décor, green carpets, and fake plants. They share a lot with other businesses with a few parking spaces reserved for Thai BBQ patrons. Prices were higher than I expected but I think they’re known for generous portions. Thai BBQ started in 1978 and grew to multiple locations.

Thai BBQ Original Restaurant, Glorietta

I regularly meet up with an old friend for lunch whenever she comes back to the Philippines on vacation from Singapore.

For our lunch adventures, we usually scour the Glorietta-Greenbelt area in Makati for restaurants that offer something new to excite our taste buds.

For this particular get-together, we decided on Thai BBQ Original Restaurant located outside Glorietta 4.

Rayong, Tratt and visiting an old friend

Onwards to my next destination, and to visit an old friend: Mr James Davis and his delightful girlfriend Katie who generously gave me an insiders view of Rayong. The city is lovingly non-touristy and hence a blessed relief after Pataya. My hosts took me to some fabulous culinary establishments, including German, Japanese and even Thai food. It was great to catch up with James, although it did admittedly make me feel rather old! We also fed the fish and visited a market where I treated myself to a £5, blatantly fake, PSG kit. Unfortunately I have yet to be mistaken as Parisian. I was able to gain a full appreciation of Rayong, as James happily gave me a lift on the back of his scooter. This may have petrified me somewhat.. Alas there is no rest for the wicked, so I was soon on my way again. I was making a break for the Thai-Cambodian border in the back of a minivan with the locals. It's a fair way so I treated myself to a stopover at a town called Tratt. Tratt is pretty quiet, but it was my first experience of trying Thai BBQ. The basic premise being they bring you a bucket of hot coals, and place a moat shaped dish with a raised interior. You are then provided with meat to sizzle in the middle, and a kind of broth in which to boil vegetables on the out-side. I was eating with another fellow from the guesthouse that night 'Paul' (I think). A Belgian DJ/restauranteur now residing in Spain, so naturally I let him take care of most of the actual cooking. I just stirred the moat a bit. The meal cost just over a £2 each and included 660ml bottle of beer. Best meal of the trip thus far. It's definitely worth trying if you get the chance. (Admittedly though health and safety might prevent a hot bucket of coals being employed at a busy restaurant back home). Having had a refined and cultured evening I was eagerly looking forward to the morrow and more importantly Cambodia.
