if it helps, I've been handling it by low-key considering anime!protag and game!protag as somewhat different characters, and using the names to differentiate. so Ren is quieter, less angry, probably dissociates on the regular and is kind of detached from his feelings, especially at first. akira is flat in effect most of the time, but more showoffy and snarky when he can get away with it; has his anger boiling much closer to the surface, though he's careful not to let it show much

I was just talking with @mallymunestelledusk about this, how each piece of media in the P5 arena has its own interpretation of the protagonist - and honestly that sets my mind at ease more than anything. All Akiras and Rens are valid, and they each bring different things to the story.

Whenever I look back at my old writing and go 'ewwww' I have to remind myself that it's because I'm better now, even if it's just a little bit, so I draw encouragement from that, then I go through it analytically to find the specific things I think need changing. The finished product ends up being much better because of that. I don't know if that'll help but I hope you don't give up on it <3
