I can't think why, but for some reason I am thinking about jokes and pranks. And when I think about jokes and pranks, my mind goes to a Baby-Sitters Club book I very nearly had memorized as a child.

Claudia and the Bad Joke tells the story of Claudia babysitting a new charge, Betsy Sobak, who is an incorrigible prankster. But things take a turn from the exasperating to the dangerous when a prank goes awry and Claudia ends up with a badly broken leg.

Revisiting the story as an adult, I was genuinely taken aback to realise how emotional I found the chapter where Claudia is laying on the ground outside the Sobak residence with a broken limb. She gives Betsy clear instruction on the steps to take and in what order - and even corrects her when Betsy offers to call Claudia's parents to advise them what's happened, telling her instead to prioritize calling her own parents and then another sitter.

Claudia is then left alone on the ground, shivering and just hoping that Betsy is actually able to follow through on this and wait for help to arrive. When the first assistance arrives in the form of Dawn and Mallory, Claudia asks Dawn not to call her grandmother Mimi - Mimi can't drive anymore due to her recent stroke, and if she was told what was happening and wasn't able to do anything she would panic. That actually gets me a little emotional just retelling that.

Claudia doesn't get enough respect for this, is what I'm getting at.

This book has been adapted to graphic novel form, with relatively few changes from the original story. Claudia's mother has a cell phone, now, which is something.

The fact that the plot evolves into a prank war between Betsy and her sitters doesn't sit as well for me as an adult, though. I know the sitters are only 13 themselves, but I don't think pranking a child to teach them that pranks aren't fun is really the right way to go. And the fact that accidentally seriously injuring someone doesn't cure Betsy of the prankster's impulse but being publicly humiliated does leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

i grew up reading the babysitters club. the graphic novels anyway. i mean, i read both versions and fell in love with all of them. something about the story of teenage girls forming a babysitting business while navigating their own lives was just special to me.

enter the netflix show. when i heard they were making one for my childhood series, i was ecstatic. then the first season came out and i didn’t like it. i thought it was preachy and didn’t live up to its predecessor. so i ignored it for about a year or two.

today i scrolled on netflix and found it once again, thought “what the heck” and watched an episode from season two. and it was good! i watched more and found myself falling back in love with the girls who practically raised me. so i went on here to see if others felt the same way about the show, possibly sharing fan creations.

and then i saw the news. there is no more. at least here won’t be now. like so many other shows, netflix canceled it for some bs reason.

The most Baby-sitters Club thing to happen in the Baby-sitters Club show is absolutely in the finale when they're all losing it at Camp Moose head and Claudia says, "Kristy, do something!" To which Kristy's (obvious) response is to pull her BSC President hat out of her back pocket (bc of course she keeps that thing on her) and call an emergency meeting.
