MODULE EVALUATION

How well have you realised /achieved your original aims as described in your Statement of Intent?

This module has advanced over time as has my statement of intent towards this end point. It has gone through three revisions over the course of the module and for this reason I will be assessing the last variant that was agreed by my tutors and myself in the later tutorials. I am satisfied with how my body of work turned out and believe that it follows on from my research adequately. Originally I intended to explore ideas of taste and consumerism within western culture and ask why some objects are chosen over others. Later it progressed to the point that it was an exploration of the aesthetics of a purely decorative set of objects and how photography could be used to present them for judgement by the audience. My intention as an artist was not to force this judgement upon the viewer and to that end I decided to use the tried and tested format of the photographic archive. This traditional format is linear and anti-hierachical in nature and facilitates the action of choice in the audience. To chose whether they find it attactive or not and if so do they aspire to own it. This last point reflects back to my original intention to examine questions of taste in the consumerist sense.

Which research has had the most impact on the development of your work and why?

Of the research I conducted I found that ideas pertaining to the conceptual use of photography were the most useful. Particularly those of artists such as Susan Hiller, Joachim Schmid and Keith Arnott. Their use of photography as an mode of conceptual expression and as an exploration of signs and language values was of great interest and helped to inform my own practice.

What skills have you gained during this module?

I feel the skill I’ve gained that is of most value is the ability to set up two shoots at two different times and aquire very similar results throughout the whole of my images. This I have not managed to do before with any previous projects. The other skill that I would cite is an increased confidence with the use of the studio, lighting and the medium format equipment.

How well did you manage your time?

I felt that I have managed my time very well and if something went wrong or I felt it wasn’t appropriate to the work I knew that I had plenty of time to address it. When I was informed that I may need more to complete my body of work I did not hesitate to organise my time accordingly and put all of the elements necessary for the project into practice.

What could have improved the outcome of this module?

I believe that on a technical note I could have addressed the area at the bottom of the individual images that were maybe too white and the issue that they subsequently bled into the surrounding borders. Also I felt I could have included more appropriate research into conceptual photography and aesthetics, but this point was reliant on finding ideas of consumerism and aesthetics within the conceptual movement. A movement that traditionally challenges ideas of language and authenticity.

Third Statement of Intent for Part Two Final Piece

For Part Two of the P8 - Constructed Image module we are required to produce a an edited and professionally presented final body of work that explores and evidences our understanding of the constructed image. We are required to produce a series of narrative images that displays our ability to create and weave into the work elements that construct and further the narrative of the individual images and the body of work as a whole.

Intention:

Our judgement of the aesthetics of a chosen object is closely associated with Bourdieu’s theory of taste and the importance that this taste has in anchoring our place in society. Of course with the increases in the reach of the taste makers throughout the mass media in the last decade a shared consensus of what is aesthetically pleasing has spread through a larger segment of society and crossed class divides. Why should this be? Aren’t we all individuals with a unique perspective on the world around us and our place within it?

Aesthetic beauty has been a concern of the philosopher for millenia and throughout the many writings and different philosophies the overriding theme was that ideas of aesthetic beauty originated from an emotional and sensory response to the object that is judged as opposed to the theories of “taste” that is a response to previously learnt experiences.

For Part Two of the P8 - Constructed Image module I intend to explore ideas of the aesthetic beauty of an object by confronting the viewer with a large selection of identically framed and presented items with a purely aesthetic function. That is to say they have no other use than to offer the viewer something to view and reflect upon. The reason that I have chosen to present my work as an archive is to provide as little confusion as to the various objects aesthetic appearance and also enable a comparison between these objects so that they start to question why they may prefer one objects aesthetic value at the expense of the others. The anti-hierachical structure of the archive also serves to highlight the authority we place in the "truth" of photography, that is to say it's role as a documenter of evidence. My intention is to subvert this by presenting an archive with no apparent practical use.

For my final body of work I intend to produce a series of five separate images that will be themselves made from a grid of nine photographs to produce an archive of aesthetic objects. These prints will measure 16.5 inches square. The length of an A3 sheet of paper on its longest aspect.

Brief for Phase One.

Following your induction to the phaseOne digital back and advance lighting workshop, you will be required to use PhaseOne digital back in the studio and produce 5 portrait images using different lighting techniques. Each image will represent a different type of lighting. You will need to consider the order in which you place your final images on a strip of paper.

Intention:

Taste in the sociological sense as described by Bourdieu helps to define who we are and how we find our place in society by processes such as cultural, social and economic capital. The importance of this can not be underestimated in our modern consumer society and subsequently this knowledge has been commandeered by the advertising industry to create a language of aspiration and advancement.

Within the visual language of consumerism there are a number of common elements that are used to create a narrative of what you’re taste should be. these are universal regardless of the product or service that is offered and are, as with the verbal claims of advertising, irrational and often unfounded.

For Part Two of the P8 - Constructed Image module I intend to explore the ideas of taste and aspiration in the bourdieuian sense by juxtaposing various objects that may be of questionable taste to the aspirational classes with the media’s modern and contemporary visual ways of presenting us with the next must-have objects of desire.

For this project my intention is to shoot in a studio environment using the Phase One H20 medium format digital back in conjunction with a Hasselblad 503 camera to produce some potentially large scale images as used in the advertising and editorial genres of photography.

Statement of Intent for Part One Portraits

For Part One of the P8 - Constructed Image module we are required to produce a series of Five colour portraits of the same model using Five varying lighting techniques, either studio flash or using the available natural light from a window or other source. They are also required to be shot on a Phase One digital back in the studio or a similar indoor space.

___________________________________________________________

The portrait genre is as old as the human ability to comprehend his environment and record it on the wall of his dwelling. From this earliest of beginnings the portrait has also been a vehicle for the recording of human achievement and wealth, be it success in the fending off of starvation or as in latter centuries accomplishments in the areas of trade, increased social standing and piety.

For my Part One portraits I intend to use the Phase One H20 medium format digital back in conjunction with the Cambo SC2 large format view camera in the studio. This is because of the camera's ability to shift it's planes of focus.

My final portraits will focus on key elements of the models face and upper body to reveal their character. I don't intend them to have any interaction with the photographer and to subsequently not look at the camera or even seem to be aware of it. I also intend my final images to be very homogeneous and sit together by selecting the same background and clothing for the model.
