This is how I imagine the friendship between these two began.

It’s rather ironic that while Odysseus, as a teenager, was being doted on by a loving family, showered with gifts, and enjoying hunting with his grandfather, Diomedes at that same age was already out fighting in a war.

(I am aware that Diomedes' age in the Epigonic War is not confirmed, but it is the age that is speculated to be.)
