 Merlin ~ Hufflepuff

Ignoring that in the HP universe Merlin was a Slytherin, Merlin is actually a bit of a hat stall. He could fit perfectly into any house based on solely his traits. He’s clever and cunning like a Slytherin, brave and chivalrous like a Gryffindor, and quirky and intelligent like a Ravenclaw. But when it comes right down to it, his values align him perfectly with Hufflepuff. He proves over and over again that above all else he values the well-being of his friends and wants to protect them from all harm, like when he cures Gwen’s father despite the risk or makes Lancelot the seal of nobility because he believes the rules are unfair. We’ve also seen his hard work and dedication in everything he does despite how unpleasant it is. He has a constant positive attitude, strong determination and kind nature. All of this makes me believe that he fits squarely in Hufflepuff. 

Arthur ~ Gryffindor

Arthur is the ultimate Gryffindor. He very much emulates the normally negative qualities of Gryffindor, as he is extremely cocky, he knows his own talents and he flaunts them as much as he can. To go along with that he is also extremely brave, and he will do anything for his friends, well sometimes. He has an incredible amount of nerve, and he is able to handle lots of difficult situations. He has to be a Gryffindor!

Gaius ~ Ravenclaw

Wisdom is literally Gaius’ middle name. He watches over everyone around him, and he tries his best to do what is best for everyone. He’s intelligent and wise, and he can tell what is going on with someone before they even know. He’s incredibly observant, and holds lots of information about interesting topics, and is able to use that intelligence when needed to help others. He has to be a Ravenclaw!

Morgana ~ Slytherin

Morgana is confident and passionate. During her early years on the show before her step into villain-hood, she is very kind and passionate despite her struggles. Morgana has a lot to hide, she tries her best to keep her problems under the radar. Though trying to fight her horrible situation, her situation drives her towards villainhood, Morgana is intelligent and cunning, and she thinks of ideas to do the things she wants to no matter the bridge she has to cross, proving her ambition. She has to be a Slytherin!

Guinevere ~ Hufflepuff

Having come from a family of low stature, Guinevere still remains optimistic and kind to those around her. She sticks by her close friends and loved ones and would do anything for them. Gwen has worked for many years as a maid while still keeping her cheerful spirit and doing whatever she could to help Lady Morgana and everyone else around her. She clearly shows the qualities of a true Hufflepuff: loyalty, kindness, a value of hard work, and dedication. She must be a Hufflepuff!

Lancelot ~ Gryffindor

Lancelot is known as “The bravest and most noble of them all.” He is the epitome of courage, never backing away from a situation that needed his help. He has a strong sense of right and wrong and is overall an extremely selfless and honorable man. Lancelot is always willing to sacrifice his anything, including his own life, to save the people he loves. These traits must mean that he is a Gryffindor!

Uther ~ Gryffindor 

Uther Pendragon is proud and brash, declaring his opinions and laws confidently. While he presents himself in this strong and arrogant manner, inside he does have emotions, and is very protective over the few people he loves, even if he might not show it. He tries to be as fair a king as possible, and despite his misguided idea of magic, does deeply care about Camelot and it’s people. These traits show he must be a Gryffindor!

The houses as... benders

I’m currently re-watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, and thought it would be fun to sort the elemental bendings into each house! Note: Just because these bending arts happen to line up with the canon element of each house from the novels, does not mean that is why I sorted them there. I considered each of the respective elements fighting styles, and their relationship with their element. This also does not mean that benders from that element necessarily fall into that house! Hope you enjoy!

Gryffindor:Fire Bender

Fire benders are direct, aggressive fighters, much like Gryffindors. Neither party is a fan of subtlety; they take an approach that, while  maintaining simplicity, retains its power. They dominate in most scenarios, and rely upon brute strength to muscle their way through conflicts. Fire benders are known to be impulsive, hot-headed individuals who act first and ask questions later. They would do well in Gryffindor. 

Ravenclaw: Air Bender

Air is the element of freedom, and this is something that suits those of the house of Ravenclaw well. Air benders form their best defense by forging an impenetrable offense; they are the strategists who look for a way to evade any major conflict. They use air as an element of manipulation rather than attack; they utilize their power to alter their environment to suit their needs. While this element may lack any fatal moves, it does allow a great versatility that leaves the bender unencumbered by the other elements. 

Slytherin: Water Bender

Like fire, the element of water harbors a darker side that would suit Slytherin well. This versatile elements fits perfectly with Slytherin’s adaptability, as it can be used for both healing and harming, depending on the desires of the bender. Their attacks can change from defensive to offensive in a split second; they are able to turn the tide in a battle when they turn their opponents strength against them. A secondary power for those with the ability to control water is bloodbending, which can be used as a powerful tool for manipulation. Like their element, water-benders have a still strength that can come out in force if necessary. 

Hufflepuff: Earth Bender

Hufflepuff is the house of patience and hard work, and this melds well with the stoic composure required of earthbenders. Those with the ability to move the earth are a patient people; they wait for just the right moment to strike. An extreme dedication is required to master this element; the Hufflepuff’s trait of loyalty would aid them here as they forged a connection with the environment around them. Earthbenders place an emphasis upon strength and fortitude, as they stand their ground against any attack. They are equally adept at both defense and offense, as they are able to sense what the right move is for the right time.

Slytherin Traits Analysis

Resourcefulness:

As far as I’m concerned, this is the most unsung value of Slytherin house, and easily the hardest to demonize. After all, what is more admirable than someone who has very little to work with and yet clenches their jaw, makes due with what they have, and finds a way to get through their problems? It is the value behind most underdog stories! Although there is an association made sometimes between Slytherin and wealth (mostly thanks to the Malfoys), we see plenty of evidence of poor Slytherins too (see Severus Snape and Tom Riddle), and in many cases we see Slytherins use their talents, strengths, and advantages to find a way to get ahead. Riddle uses his magical talent, gift for Parseltongue, and natural charm. Snape uses his talents in dueling, Potions, and Occlumency. Slughorn uses his amiability and talent in Potions. Lucius uses his money and influence. Draco uses his father’s influence and his own charisma. Narcissa uses her wits and convincing air. Regulus uses his brain and sneakiness. Sometimes these examples are not always positive, but it certainly makes it clear that from a tiny acorn of resourcefulness can sprout a perfect oak tree of a witch or wizard.

Determination:

For a snake, determination is what makes everything work. It’s taking care of your two-year-old child when you’ve just had a baby as a single mother and have no money for a nanny or sitter. It’s working for your mean boss who threatens to fire you every hour to prove them wrong -- to show them that you can’t be scared so easily. Determination is very important to achieve our ambitions; it’s where we get our confidence, what gets us up in the morning each day. Without drive, there can be no passion, and without passion, there is almost no possible chance of success.

Self-Preservation:

How many times have we heard people argue that all Slytherins are cowards? Too many times, honestly...and it’s not deserved. Slytherins can be very brave -- look at Severus Snape, or Regulus or Andromeda Black. Heck, even villains like Voldemort, Bellatrix, and Umbridge wouldn’t likely be characterized as explicitly “cowardly” either. Slytherins are also not the only characters who are ever considered cowardly -- we’ve seen Ravenclaws like Lockhart and Quirrel and Gryffindors like Pettigrew be cowards too, not to mention characters like Fudge who we don’t know the house of but I’m going to go out on a limb and guess wasn’t a Slytherin. So yes, first, to get this out of the way, self-preservation =/= cowardice. Self-preservation means...just that! Looking out for oneself. And that is a very undervalued thing. Selflessness is generally considered eternally virtuous, but if one looks at it carefully, it can also cause a lot of harm. Never taking care of yourself can destroy your health as well as your emotional state, and if someone truly loves you, they should want you to be happy and healthy...thus it would be in your best interest to look after yourself. And if that person doesn’t want that, then that could mean you’re pouring your heart and energy into someone who doesn’t deserve it.

Self-preservation is not selfishness. Self-preservation is not cowardice. It is recognizing your own value and knowing you only have one life to live, and therefore choosing not to throw away your shot.

A Disregard for the Rules:

Most Slytherins tend to have a blatant disregard for rules, mostly because rules only hold them back. Say no one is allowed to use potion ingredients but certain professors, but they gotta figure out who stole their homework last night. You think something like that’s gonna hold them back? Nope. Another example would be Voldemort himself. Wanna live forever? No way in hell is anyone gonna stop him, whether it’s some Gryffindor he tried to kill as a baby, Dumbledore, or the entire Ministry of Magic. 

I think that’s a big reason why Slytherin is known as the ‘evil’ house. We have our own rules, our own boundaries for ourselves. Other rules we deem unimportant, though we’re still aware of them. It doesn't matter if we break some rules that another person made up, but if we break our own? No, that’s not okay. Someone could be perfectly okay with stealing something, but if you have to hurt a person to do so and they’re not okay with that? It’s not happening. The code of honor is different for each Slytherin -- sometimes it can even be just as principled as the rules already in place. The important thing is that the code of honor comes from us, not an outside source. If we believe in it with all our hearts, we will fight to protect it.

Cleverness:

This value is what makes some mistakenly label people as Ravenclaw instead of Slytherin. The main difference is where the intelligence comes from. Ravenclaws tend to rely on academic, logical knowledge -- the sorts you find in books that can be measured and catalogued. Slytherins rely on emotional knowledge, or common sense -- the kind you can only get by working a job first-hand, or the kind you acquire from knowing somebody intimately. Slytherins are usually very insightful people and they can often read others without much difficulty. They are the sorts to make connections from their own experiences to make conclusions about something outside themselves. For example, Voldemort is able to predict Harry’s behavior a few times in the books simply due to how intimate his knowledge is of the boy thanks to their Horcrux connection, and Severus Snape is able to predict (correctly) that Quirrel isn’t to be trusted because he himself is a master of deception and espionage. Even Regulus is sharp enough to know it would be more prudent (and it would also twist the knife into Voldemort more) to quietly leave a note with the fake Horcrux in the Horcrux’s hiding place for the Dark Lord to find instead of openly confronting him. Cleverness is not as easily measured in tests as book smarts, but its value is truly incalculable.

Ambition:

Slytherins are known for being ambitious, and most of us are, but just to get something straight, ambition is not something to be solely demonized. People say that we Slytherins would do anything for power, but if you look at house members like Narcissa Malfoy, Horace Slughorn, Regulus Black, etc., their ambition was not power. It was protecting their family and freedom. Ambition is really just recognizing what you could achieve and growing towards it. An ambitious attitude, they say, can accomplish anything, no matter what life throws at you. Slytherins realize this, and that’s how they may achieve greatness. Merlin himself was in the house from fen, and to this day people say his name for regular things (e.g. “Merlin’s Pants!”). The good thing about ambition is it is all about scale, and whether you want to become a powerful politician or just a beloved member of your community, you can achieve greatness at any level and in many ways.

The Mods Describe Common Rooms

Ravenclaw (By Abigail) 

always music playing, a different member of ravenclaw chooses the music every day, varies from classical, to indie pop, to rock, to well, whatever that person wants to listen to 

super duper cozy, literally a billion quilts, a bunch of pillows, and beds/study zones perfectly made for each person 

huge windows on different walls, Ravenclaws spend so much time studying, or well not studying that sometimes it’s hard to get out, this helps, Of course though, there is a huge telescope for night time, like a huge telescope

there’s an enchanted dumbwaiter that can bring thing’s up from the kitchens, mostly snack foods, and things you can eat while doing other things and not make a mess 

depending on when you get there, if you fall asleep in the common room, the head girl or boy, or well anyone who decides to wake you up will help you back to your room 

one wall is literally a huge book shelf, people leave a book for every year they go to school there and leave there favorite book of the year there, theres copies of some super old books that have been there for over eighty years, the first book there was Romeo and Juliet, the pages are a little tatered at the tops and bottoms, but other than that its good as new 

shoes are totally not required, but theres millions of pairs of slippers in a bucket if you want them 

The room is enchanted to sense what the claws are feeling and flows smells that will calm them down, or make them happy 

plastic stars and planets are stuck to the ceiling everywhere

there are two walls devoted completely to art, on the area beside the wall, theres a huge raised up thing filled with paint, paint brushes, pastels, crayons, sharpies and anything else they need. They started with only one art wall, but that quickly changed when the first wall was covered in the week, every month they repaint the wall so they can start over. 

Hufflepuff (By Jinxy and Star)

Fireplaces on every wall, all constantly stocked, stoked, and cosy, all with plenty of pot plants with flowers, succulents and a few herbs. The fireplaces have plants climbing up the sides and making a nice covering for the front.

Wide windows, with the sun permanently pouring in (even in winter), except at night, when the stars give off a yellow glow and it lights up the room.

Scented candles everywhere: caramel, chocolate, and popcorn scented to make the room smell sweet.

Trapdoor to the kitchens, so students don’t get caught out of bed after dark.

Couches have piles of fluffy blankets next to them, and tables all around the common room are covered in hot chocolate.

Hardwood floors, with sunflower pattern rugs dotted throughout the common room (which occasionally bloom real sunflowers!)

Birds always chirping in the background.

Lots of cats lying in the sunspots on the floor, or curled up on the couches under the blanket piles. Whenever students from other houses lose their cats, they're always in the Hufflepuff common room.

Milk bowls and lots of food on the floor for the cats.

Students’ essays framed around the rooms if they got the highest score, so students can get inspo, and so that other students can admire the work (and feel proud of beating the Ravenclaws, because of the silly rivalry).

At Christmas time, one of the prefects always puts up an elf on the shelf, but it moves by itself, does all sorts of silly things, and winks at you. Students add gold tinsel to the fireplaces, and plenty of big colourful bows.

At Easter, bunnies roam the room, and love getting cuddles and letting students’ smush their faces. One prefect every year is assigned to do an Easter theme activity with the students, be it egg hunting, bunny face painting, painting new curtains, or truffle making, and the room adjusts and provides what the students need.

Big cheery curtains framing the windows (white lace, that’s been hand painted with yellow prints or flowers). They're always drawn apart to let the light in, but can be closed as needed.

There’s a humongous bookshelf (because Ravenclaws aren't the only ones who are allowed to read) where students share books. All of the covers are worn and bent, but it's okay because everyone gets a chance to enjoy the books that others love. Some have highlighting in them, mustaches on the pictures on the front and love letters to other students in them. There’s textbooks for if you couldn’t afford one that year, muggle books about foreign countries, books in other languages, and muggle books about what they think wizards are, and students have graffiti all over them, as a protest. There's a surprising lack of cookbooks. Because, despite common thought, Hufflepuffs aren't always the best cooks, and the kitchens are close anyway.

There’s a giant hand painted portrait of Helga Hufflepuff on the far wall, which students have enchanted to host Helga, so she gives advice, welcomes new students with a song at the start of the year, and tells students to go to bed.

Bathrooms all have large luxurious baths, where the whole person can fit, and no need for bubble bath or scents, because it fills automatically with it when a student presses a button. Each student has customized shampoo, conditioner and products made by older potions students to keep their hair and skin healthy and glowy. Each student gets an ‘appointment’, and the older student makes up bottles that only that student can open, with constant refills.

Privacy curtains that students can choose to pull or not, and all have yellow flower patterns on them.

Warm fluffy towels, in the students’ favourite colour, with their name embroidered on it. Always warmed up, and fresh every time.

Students’ beds have multiple covers on it, and unlimited pillows, and teddies galore. There’s a basket at the end of the bed for dirty laundry, returned clean within 6 hours, and folded. Each student gets a nice window at the head of their bead with their favourite flowers growing there, and most students choose lavender to help them sleep at night. Curtains can only be drawn on weekends and until certain times on weekdays, so students can sleep in, but pull open at 7:30 to wake up students naturally and without alarm clocks.

Bedside tables for each student, and students can choose 15 knick-knacks from home to remind them of home, and each student automatically gets a moving image of their families back home.

No mirrors (except in bathrooms), because students will tell each other when they have their uniform askew or their hair is messy. Uniforms hung at the ends of beds so students can sleep in and not need to find their clothes.

Slytherin (By Tory)

Knick-knacks galore on the bookcases and mantels, each with a special story. Like that shattered crystal ball? That was smuggled out of Professor Trelawney’s class one day by a Slytherin student as a joke, but after the theft, he and others swore it could predict test answers. (It broke when some particularly stupid student tried to smuggle it under his desk for his OWLs, but thankfully a Slytherin prefect retrieved it and put it back.) That old music box? Brought in by a Muggle-born student in the 19th century and soon enchanted her classmates to the extent that they got used to hearing it play every night before they fell asleep. When she left the school, she decided to leave it behind for the younger classes as a memento, enchanting it with a Self-Repairing Charm so that it would never break no matter how many times it was played. That skull? Found buried under the tree by the lake by a Slytherin student...alas, no one knows who it belongs to, but the students have taken to calling her Salazara and treat her with utmost respect.

Slytherin students frequently wave to the merpeople swimming outside their windows. The merpeople don’t really understand what waving means, but sort of shake their hands back and forth in response in an attempt to be friendly.

Their bathrooms are classy, elegant, and off-the-hook. Each student would have access to their own special area made up of a shower/bath and a changing area with several mirrors behind a curtain. That way each student would have complete privacy getting ready before anyone else saw them -- no sharing mirrors or sinks here. Each stall would also be equipped with old-fashioned fixtures that offer both fresh and salt water baths, as well as bubble baths!

There is a baby grand piano set up in the corner. If no one plays it, it plays itself.

There are all sorts of trapdoors and secret compartments hidden in each dorm, perfect for hiding personal items or even just escaping from your dormmates. Most Slytherins haven’t found them all, and if they are in use, the handle goes red hot, so as to deter any stranger who might want to disturb the person using it or their belongings.

WINDOW SEATS. SO MANY WINDOW SEATS. Also a few chaise longues.

Lots of portraits of old witches and wizards litter the walls, and they always love giving career advice.

The fireplace actually is part of a revolving wall. If you push a certain brick on the mantle, it spins around and reveals a secret passage that leads to the kitchens.

The huge grandfather clock in the main common room tolls the hour to the tune of “Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts.”

Because it’s very hard for owls to get down to the dungeons, they are trained to drop their mail down a chute in the Owlery that magically drops the mail down into a collection tray in the center of the Slytherin common room. A separate collection tray then spits any outgoing mail up to the next available owl, if the student doesn’t care which owl sends it.

That cork board in the corner is the bravery board. It plays host to a number of everyday moments of bravery

Volunteering in class because you’re afraid of public speaking.

Asking out that cute Slytherin in potions; it’s up there.

Every day victories that make life worth wild are praised on that board

The chairs in the common room are both capable of heating and icing. The house charmed them years ago. Every year the house team renews the spells. 

On more than one occasion, the Gryffindor Quidditch team has commandeered the chairs, their groans filling the air as the chairs soothed their aching muscles

There’s a set of enchanted free weights that allow you to work out without a partner. 

Doing a chest press only to drop it from fatigue will elevate it above your chest as long as you’re a certain body temperature.

That box next the fire holds an enchanted dueling mat. 

When removed from the box it begins expanding into a cushioned dueling deck. 

This allows most Gryffindor to practice dueling in a safe environment without to much harm......most of the time.

This is accentuated by the shoot down to the hospital wing. 

Madam Pomfry has enchanted the door to play achy breaky heart when it’s accessed. That way she can catch the poor darling.

Percy: Hufflepuff

One of Percy’s main characteristics is that he’s loyal to the core (in the books, it’s even revealed that his fatal flaw is his undying loyalty.) He turns down godhood in the first series because he wants to stay with his friends and has risked his life on multiple occasions to protect friends, strangers, and enemies alike. This boy would do anything for the people he loves, and is incredibly kind and accepting. He’s also very hardworking and dedicated, and usually foresees missions through to the end, especially if it’s to help his friends or family. 

Annabeth: Ravenclaw

Like most Ravenclaws, Annabeth is incredibly intelligent. With Athena, the goddess of wisdom herself, as her mother, it truly makes sense that this girl is a Ravenclaw. She constantly relies on logic and has often been shown to think things through before acting (unlike Percy, who tends to jump right in.) She’s even called “Wise Girl” on multiple occasions by Percy! For a girl as thoughtful as Annabeth, is there truly a better house than Ravenclaw?

Jason: Gryffindor

Son of Zeus, Jason Grace is a natural leader. Like many Gryffindors, he is brave and confident, believing in both himself and others. He is willing to go up against stronger enemies, even if he knows that the odds aren’t on his side. Jason is also very heroic, and will protect his friends in a heartbeat, regardless of the consequences. He shows a few Hufflepuff traits as well (like his acceptance of Nico’s sexuality and his loyalty to his friends), but in the end he seems to fit the Gryffindor mold a little bit better.

Piper: Slytherin

Piper is a strong, rebellious character. She follows her heart, not unlike how a Slytherin would pursue their goals or ambitions. Despite being a child of Aphrodite, she isn’t afraid to play dirty, and is a force to be reckoned with when she or her friends are messed with. Piper is a Slytherin for her drive, strong willpower, sharp bite, and the protective way she defends the ones she loves.  

Leo: Ravenclaw

Let’s get one thing straight: Leo fixes a giant metal dragon, becomes friends with said dragon, and helps build the Argo II. He is an incredibly talented and intelligent character. He takes his work seriously and is dedicated to his creations. Leo is also quite individualistic (a defining Ravenclaw trait), though it can be noted that this leads to one of his main faults: his inferiority complex. Leo is a very unique, different character (especially compared to the others.) He recognizes this, and it causes him to draw himself away and alienate himself instead of recognizing his own strengths and abilities. Despite this, we are still able to see him learn and grow throughout the series, and he slowly begins to accept himself and his abilities, just as any true Ravenclaw would.

Frank: Gryffindor

Despite being somewhat shy and modest a lot of the time, Frank is a very brave character. He overcomes his fear of the thing that could kill him, which is a very difficult and hard thing to do that some people never manage. He also becomes more confident as the series progresses, and is shown to be both strong and courageous on the battlefield! 

Hazel: Gryffindor

Hazel is fearless, y’all. She marches into danger without blinking an eye or with a fear of mortality- perhaps because she’s already died. She has literally sacrificed herself in a variety of painful ways that are to save her friends/facilitate the greater good. She encapsulates the Gryffindor traits of bravery, courage, and a thirst for justice to the ‘T,’ and would do well in the house of red and gold. 

Nico: Ravenclaw

Alright! Time for my baby Nico! Nico is such a complex character, y’all. He pulls traits from nearly every house, which makes him so difficult to sort. However, he seems to pull most of his characteristics from those associated with Ravenclaw. Intelligence. Wit. Creativity. Originality. Acceptance. Nico is definitely an original- he often spends most of his time alone, doing his own thing. He doesn’t need anyone else. He’s shown himself to be creative from the little creations he makes with the bones, and fun he has playing games such as Mythomagic. (side note: he’s such a nerd over those mythomagic cards. another reason.)  Lastly, one of the most important things to Nico is acceptance. Both Percy’s and Bianca’s acceptance of him is why he loves them so much. He resents his time at Camp Half-Blood so much because he was rejected. He even has an emotional moment in which he reveals that he feels no one has ever-or will ever- accept him for who he is. Part of your sorting is your personality/who you are, but the other part is what the house could provide that you would need. Ravenclaw would provide Nico with the acceptance he so fervently sought after.
