When Ethan had met Tess, the first thing he noticed about her were vivid gray eyes under straight dark brows. She had fine, fair skin and chestnut hair usually worn twisted into a slightly messy knot held in place at the nape of her neck with a pair of beaded hair sticks. Her heart-shaped face contrasted oddly with her roman nose, and a wide mouth. She wasn’t conventionally beautiful, but there had been something about her that had caught his attention: her spirit, her directness, her confidence. And her kindness had attracted him immediately. But, it had taken them nearly three quarters of a year to start courting, since neither of them had wanted to endanger his friendship with her uncles. Cy and Jake were independent and outspoken, and didn’t make friends easily.
Finally, Ethan hadn’t been able to stand it anymore, and he’d kissed her.
And, she’d kissed him back.
The memory made him smile.
She was sitting at the dinner table in the dining room with the rest of Unseasoned’s inhabitants, between her uncles, a soft little smile playing around her mouth and eyes. Hell, she was practically glowing, and he was pretty sure Cy and Jake had figured out what she and Ethan had gotten up to that afternoon.
But that wasn’t the reason he was nervous. Taking a deep breath, and all too aware of the small wooden box in his pocket, Ethan reminded himself that Tess had already said yes, that his would just make things official.
He walked around the table to stand behind Tess’s seat, placed a hand on her shoulder. And waited. Gradually, the buzz of voices died down, until everyone was looking at them curiously.
“Tess and I have an announcement to make.” Ethan’s raspy voice was quiet, and he smiled as Tess’s hand came up to cover his. “This afternoon, I asked her to marry me.”
“And, I said yes!” She tipped her head back to grin at him at the buzz of excited voices.
Ethan took a deep breath and pulled the box out of his pocket as he knelt next to Tess’s chair. “This belonged to my mother,” he said quietly. “It’s been passed down through my family for generations.” He opened the box. “I’d like you to wear it.”
In the box was a simple gold ring set with a stone that caught fire from the room’s lights.
Tess’s beautiful gray eyes went wide, and she pressed her fingers to her lips. “Ethan!”
He held up the ring, and she smiled, blinking hard, and offered her hand. He gently slipped it onto her ring finger.
“It fits!” Tess was delighted. She leaned over and kissed her husband-to-be.
