Avatar: the Last Airbender Personality Types: Zuko
Ah, the character with the best arc in the history of stories. I must've watched this show at least 30 times by now, and I still cry every time he confronts his father, and again when he begs Iroh's forgiveness. Truly, what a beautiful and satisfying arc.
Zuko's Enneagram
Wound: When Zuko spoke his mind in a war meeting, he was punished by having to fight his father. He didn't fight, and his father burned him and exiled him with an impossible task. Additionally, his younger sister was a more talented firebender, and his mother left when he was a young boy.
Wounding message: You are worthless. You need to earn your right to be part of your family.
Core desire: To prove his worth.
Core fear: Being worthless.
Defense mechanism: Zuko works tirelessly in pursuit of his goal to capture the Avatar. He trains hard and develops a wide range of skills to supplement his weaker firebending.
Strengths: Zuko is principled, disciplined, able to think on his feet, tenacious, and courageous.
Challenges: Zuko is angry, afraid of vulnerability, insensitive, competitive, and stubborn
When healthy: Zuko is mellower, kinder, and more relationship-oriented
When unhealthy: Zuko is angrier, out of touch with his own feelings, and doesn't know when to quit
Looking at all of this, here's what connects when I go back to the Enneagram post:
Wound: he honestly could be any of them
Wounding message: again, he kind of fits with all of them
Core desire: 3
Core fear: 3
Defense mechanism: 1 or 3
Strengths: 1, 3, or 8
Challenges: 3, 4, 6, or 8
When healthy: 1, 2, 3, 6, or 8
When unhealthy: 1, 2, 6, or 7
Zuko is an Enneagram 3.
Threes live in the Heart center and tend to underexpress shame/sadness. From Personality Path:
Shame or Sadness is underexpressed by Type 3s, manifesting instead as attempts to look good in the eyes of others. They move away from feelings of inadequacy by trying to prove they are not just adequate, but in fact, they are the best. Anger may get triggered if their image is tarnished, around concerns about their reputation, or if they feel they might “look bad.” Fear comes up in the face of failure: a failed work project, a divorce or breakup, or an imploding business transaction. Type 3s may feel fear as a precursor to shame. Issues of image and concerns around failure are often at the bottom of the three core emotions for Type 3s.
Wing
The Enneagram Institute describes 3w2 as "The Charmer," and 3w4 as "The Profesional." I think 3w4 is much more likely for Zuko.
Here's the description of 3w4 from Truity
The 3w4 Type is a Three that shares many qualities of the Type Four. This type tends to be more introverted, serious and focused on work rather than social engagements and relationships. Three wing Fours are consistently working toward personal growth and professional success.
Machi Kuragi from Fruits Basket is also a 3w4, as is Kyoya Ootori from Ouran High School Host Club.
Zuko is often typed as a 4 online (and I initially thought he would be a 4, too!), because he does seem to act like a stereotypical 4 in a lot of ways. Additionally, his story is that of finding himself - something that resonates with 4s' desire for authenticity. However, I don't think he sets out to find himself, nor do I think he has an especially strong desire to be unique, original, or authentic. His defense mechanism, strengths, and stress response are very un-Four-ish.
I have also seen Zuko typed as a 1, which I also considered. He has a strong moral compass, which is certainly a characteristic of many Ones. He also is holding on to a lot of anger, and Ones are driven by anger, rather than shame (like Threes).
However, I don't think he is centrally driven by anger, nor do I think he is driven by a desire to be above reproach in and of itself. I also think a strong sense of right and wrong is something that anyone of any type can have. I don't see him becoming more playful or spontaneous, the way Ones do when healthy, and I don't think his core desire or fear are very One-ish.
In a way, Three marries the parts of One and Four that seem most like Zuko, and it captures something about Zuko that I think the other two types don't, which is that he's driven by his perception of who he's supposed to be, and letting go of that preconception in order to discover, accept, and work toward who he wants to be, as a conscious choice, is at the heart of his arc.
Zuko wants to prove his worth. Or, in his words, win back his honor.
Threes are one of the most misunderstood types, in my opinion. The stereotype is that they're vain, image- and status-obsessed, and selfish. And many unhealthy Threes certainly can appear that way. But Zuko, just like Machi and Kyoya and all Threes, uses his personal estimation of his image and status as a substitute for true self-worth. All three of these characters were forced into conflict with their siblings to try and prove their worth to their parents. They don't believe they have inherent value until someone shows them that they do. Zuko had Iroh, Machi had Yuki, and Kyoya had Tamaki.
Hell, my own brother is a Three (with a 4 wing!), and I know too well that he felt terribly overshadowed by me, and that he could never live up to the high standards I'd set in his mind. (Meanwhile, I was envious of all the things that came to my brother more easily, all the ways I perceived him to be "better" than me. It was all in both of our heads the whole time!)
Subtype
Zuko's focus is usually directed inward, so I think he's most likely a SP 3w4.
From Enneagram Explained:
Focuses On: The need to be valuable/admired in order to have their physical needs met. SP 3s are the Countertype of type 3 as they react in an opposite way with their vice (vanity). They want to achieve but they don’t want to brag about it. These 3s focus more on being good and attaining material security for themselves and their family. Relationship to Their Vice (vanity): SP 3s tend to suppress their vanity Potential Mistypes: SP 3s can often look like type 1s.
He also shares this subtype with Machi Kuragi!
Tritype
With 3 as his Heart type, I think Zuko's Head type is most likely 5 or 6, and his Gut type could be either 1 or 8. After reading the descriptions, I think 3-5-8, "The Solution Master," is the best fit. From Katherine Fauvre's website:
If you are a 358, you are ambitious, knowledgeable, and protective. You want to be efficient, wise, and straightforward. Tough-minded, you are good at studying a problem and finding both the original and practical solutions others often miss. You are a no-nonsense person and prefer to use logic over emotion to achieve your goals. Highly tenacious, you work tirelessly until you find effective solutions and can prevail against adversity.
This makes a lot of sense for Zuko. While there are things about him that connect with both 1 and 6, I do think his tendency is to over-express anger, and to under-express fear (as well as shame, with 3 as his primary type).
Zuko's MBTI:
Information-Gathering:
Someone who introverts iNtuition and extroverts Sensing will be able to cut to the core of understanding something in a state of deep, solitary focus. They will gather sensory information through their experience in the present, preferably with others. Visioning + Experiencing
Someone who extroverts iNtuition and introverts Sensing will tend to brainstorm aloud, connecting many possibilities at once, and will rely on comparisons to past sense-memories in order to understand the present. Brainstorming + Remembering
I think the first paragraph is the better fit for Zuko. I'm not entirely sure whether he uses Ni or Se more, but I suspect Ni, meaning he's an -N-J type.
Decision-Making:
Someone who introverts Thinking and extroverts Feeling will use their own internal logical framework to come to decisions, and will base their decisions on outcomes for the people around them. Analyzing + Harmonizing
On the other hand, someone who extroverts Thinking and introverts Feeling will use external logic in decision-making, such as rules, laws, procedures, checklists, etc... and will base their decisions on the kind of person they want to be, or the kind of person they see themselves to be. Organizing + Valuing
I think the second paragraph is a better fit for Zuko, meaning he's an -NTJ type.
I think it's most likely he uses Ni, Te, Fi, Se, making him an INTJ.
Let's see how the Myers and Briggs Foundation describes his dominant and inferior processes:
Ni as dominant:
Can appear visionary. Connects unconscious images, themes, and connections to see things in new ways. Brainstorm internally with themselves. Trusts and relies on inner insights, which may be hard for others to understand. Keyword: Visioning.
When exaggerated:
unrealistic visions, only accept data that supports their theories, make things overcomplicated
Se as inferior:
obsess over external, small, unimportant details, overindulge in sensual pleasures (overeat, over drink, etc.), see environment as hostile and dangerous
These sound a lot like Zuko, with the exception of "overindulge in sensual pleasures". I think a lot of this describes his relentless pursuit of the Avatar before Aang was confirmed to be alive.
This would make him INTJ, the Mastermind! A description:
Have original minds and great drive for implementing their ideas and achieving their goals. Quickly see patterns in external events and develop long-range explanatory perspectives. When committed, organize a job and carry it through. Skeptical and independent, have high standards of competence and performance—for themselves and others.
I don't think I've analyzed an INTJ yet!
Much like his Enneagram, I think INTJ is a very misunderstood type. INTJs are often stereotyped as being cold, unfeeling, even machine-like.
Zuko's Personality Summary:
Enneagram: SP 3w4 (The Achiever/The Professional)
Tritype: 3-5-8 (The Solution Master)
MBTI: INTJ (The Mastermind)
Zuko's drive is indisputable. He's tenacious, determined, and holds himself and those around him to a very high standard. He is proud, principled, and ready to put in the hard work necessary toward a goal.
What do you think? Did I get it right or wrong? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
