Have you watched the 2017 Mummy?
Oh yes, @animatedc9000 and I decided to watch it on the first anniversary of the day we officially started working on our Monster AU (and plan on watching theĀ ā90s one for the second one this year since she hasnāt seen it). In some ways itās just as bad as I thought it would be, and in other ways it was somehow worse? Iām really glad she was there with me to help me get through it, because⦠it just wasnāt fun. In some ways it was cathartic to poke fun at it, but for the most part it was a draining experience for both of us. (Part of that couldāve been because of the run time though because really, Universal, did it need to be almost two hours long?!)
I really donāt even know where to begin with my problems with it. That their take on Jekyll and Hyde for this new shared universe theyāre setting up is actually not very interesting so far? That it randomly plays theĀ āblack guy dies firstā trope completely straight (I donāt count the Mummy girlās family, they barely qualify as characters)? That the backstory for the Mummy herself couldāve made for a whole movie in and of itself or at least wouldāve been more interesting to have it gradually revealed instead of being told about all of it towards the very beginning of the film? That theĀ ālove interestā of Tom Cruiseās character barely does anything outside of exposition, even though her backstory makes it seem like sheās a much more interesting character than Cruiseās and shouldāve been more of the focus than him? That focusing on the two main women in this movie in general and having the conflict be between them couldāve been more interesting than having it focus on Cruiseās character? (We canāt have that though, because then the straight white dudes will be mad that itās not about them. š) That the Mummyās design in this is weirdly sexual? That the most unique thing they did with this attempted reboot of their classic Universal Monsters films is make the Mummy a woman, only to then have it end with her being killed by Cruiseās character, which is really a terrible way to start off this shared universe thatās focused on the Universal Monsters?
So yeah, Iāve seen it. Donāt particularly like it.
