[11:07 PM] The sound of Minghao's faint, sweet breath threatened to lull me to sleep as it fanned gently over my skin. His lips just barely danced on the nape of my neck, still managing to send goosebumps down my arms and butterflies soaring in my stomach and chest. I subconsciously scooted back closer to him, his arms tightening around me ever so slightly as he welcomed me further.

"Hey y/n?" He whispered, sleep evident in his voice. I simply hummed in response, a smile immediately gracing my face and reaching up to my tired eyes as I took in his sleepy voice, the one that I was so lucky to be the sole audience to.

"I love you." His smile could be heard in his voice, as I'm almost positive mine could when I repeated the words back.

*so this is garbage but happy birthday to the wonderfully talented xu minghao!! seventeen and carats are blessed to have you and thank you for being such a wonderful addition to the world :)*

Minghao: Barista AU

A scenario where Minghao is the barista at the coffee shop that you bring your books to study in every day.

the coffee shop on your college campus was always interesting to go to

seeing all the different students of different majors

all desperately in need of money

fighting to work part time

you had your own job tutoring other students, but fortunately, you had time to yourself to study as well

and when you needed to study, you always came to this coffee shop

once the semester’s staff was set

the coffee shop had a calmer atmosphere

which you appreciated

you toted your books there, ordered a cup of coffee, and sat down in the alcove in the far back corner to study every day

you enjoyed the soft piano music that played there

it was the perfect place to study in

one day when you came in a little earlier than usual, arms full of books

and you saw a barista you had never seen before wiping down the counter

you carefully balanced your books on the edge of the counter

“hi how can I help you?” the barista asked

you didn’t bother to squint at his name tag

it appeared as if he didn’t usually have this shift anyway

you didn’t care what his name was

how many people actually check their barista’s name tags?

he was cute though

“uh yeah can i get the chai latte”

you started searching your pockets for your money

“who actually drinks chai lattes”

your neck nearly snapped since you looked up at the barista so quickly

you stared at his name tag for a moment

“um I DO, XU MINGHAO. do you have a problem with that?”

his face looked a bit shocked

his mouth turned into an O

whoops thughao slipped out at work

“I’m so sorry. I don’t usually act like this.” he apologized quickly

“yeah so you’re secretly super rude. I’m going to tell your manager.”

“please don’t. I’ll pay for your drink”

you were joking

of course

but as you tried to protest

he insisted that he would pay

he refused the money you handed him and hurried behind the large divider to make your drink

you shrugged, stuffing the money you were about to hand him into the tip jar

and took your seat, lugging your books with you

of course, you missed the glance he shot at you as he prepared your drink

you sat down in your usual alcove, tucked up in the corner, book in your lap, immersing yourself in your book

you heard a soft clunk beside you 

you looked up in surprise 

and saw Minghao setting your hot drink on the table beside you

“oh thank you. you could’ve just called my name, I would have come picked it up”

“it’s alright. it’s the least I could do for being so rude to you.” he replied genuinely

although you were sure he was still judging you for your chai latte

for some reason

from then on

every day you came, Minghao was always there

he no longer made snarky comments about your choice in drink

but you did notice he gave you random discounts

it wasn’t until about two months later

when Minghao handed you and drink and told you it was on the house

did you actually look through all the receipts you stuff in your purse

and saw exactly what Minghao was giving you discounts for

for being a loyal customer– 10% off

for coming at 3:30pm instead of 4:00pm as usual– 15% off

for choosing not to order a chai latte– 45% off

just for coming today– 5% off

for giving me a smile– 40% off

for choosing to order a chai latte– 1% off

for making my heart flutter– 10% off

for calling me out on my rudeness– 35% off

for making me fall in love with you– 100% off

at the last line

you stopped in your tracks

and turned back to look at Minghao, his mouth open in mid-gasp

“you…. you actually read it today… I didn’t think you would ever read your receipts–”

and so you gestured to your seat by the alcove

“would you like to join me for a cup of coffee? a little birdie told me you actually don’t have a shift today”

and so from then on

you and Minghao talked a lot more

he came with you to the coffee shops on his break days to cuddle in the small alcove

although you had originally protested

because it was your alcove 

but you learned to deal with it

he was warm and comfortable and was very useful in holding your stuff for you

who would have known the boy who judged your choice of drink

would end up meaning so much to you?
