Taliesin bringing the delicious with a sentient object, a living mask from a play meant to kill a god, the quintessential and eternal facade in both a literal and figurative sense... Who then went and fell in love¹ with a man who brings plays to life.
Add to that the Nat20/Nat1 roll where none of us get to have any idea how much of Bolaire's story is the truth and how much of it is the role he made up or was created to play. We have no idea how much agency he truly had in his dealings with Thjazi versus how much he wants to have in his life and how much he believes he even can have. He could even be lying to himself about it, which is a neat trick in a being whose entire purpose is to be a weaponized lie turned true and performed in the name of freedom. And then there are all the narrative parallels of a mask who IS a role supposedly trying to be truthful with Hal, when Hal's entire life is spent crafting believable lies and playing them so well they occasionally become almost true... A man who is now wearing the liar's blade, no less, but who trusted Bolaire and continues to do so.
All of this after that cold open, where technically Bolaire did nothing except show up empty handed and then clean up the mess from a bad man making a selfish choice, though in reality he played a series of roles in that encounter from start to finish and absolutely engineered that entire scene. That was clearly premeditated, even if technically there was nothing he could do to stop it once it was rolling. Something something, the show must go on.
There are so many good ingredients for symbolism and philosophy in this construction. I cannot wait to see how they play out.
¹ May or may not be in a strictly romantic sense, though to hear him talk it sure as fuck sounds romantic, in that way that theatrical love always contains some inherent drama. At the bare minimum, Hal is someone he loves with everything that he is (whatever that means), and sees as his to protect.
