#JackedKirby - The Big Red Cheese by Simon and Kirby!!! Back in 1941 DC (Fawcett at the time) had more then just Superman filling the ranks of heroes in its funny pages... the hero Captain Marvel (later known as Shazam) was quite popular and flying off the shelves!!! Why most comic fans may know that Captain Marvel goes back that far (his first appearance is actually from the late 1930s), many don’t know that the creators of another famous “Captain” worked on some of his early stories!!! Joe Simon and Jack Kirby contributed to three issues/volumes of Captain Marvel Adventures that spanned 1941. The books were anthology style stories (usually 6-8 pages) featuring Billy Batson taking on everything from common criminals, aliens and monsters to his arch nemesis Dr. Sivana... and this was right around the time that Simon/Kirby were publishing their first Captain America stories for competitor Timely Comics!!! They would spend days at the Timely office working on Cap, and nights in secret over at Fawcett crafting tales of Shazam!!! There are not many scans of these early issues of Captain Marvel Adventures floating around the internet, but I was able to locate this panel from #Issue1 which was published in early 1941 (#Issue2 has a Summer 1941 release date listed, so this is probably Jan/Feb of 41). Kind of cool to see the King take on DC’s godlike Shazam...
