There’s been a bit of a surge of middle eastern food in London now with places like Ottolenghi, the Palomar (read our review here) and a bunch of others. A place I’ve been wanting to give a go was The Good Egg and now that they have a 2nd store after their original store in Stoke Newington in Kingly Court next to Carnaby St, it was easier than ever to go have brunch in! :)
We started with a tahini shake which is essentially tahini, banana and oat milk shaken over ice and topped with a date. You could really taste the banana in this but there was still a strong sesame flavour. It’s a pretty heavy drink but not bad!
This was a flatbread, drizzled in thyme honey. It was flaky, buttery, sweet and sticky. It was maybe a little too sweet but that’s me being picky. I really liked this.
The flatbread went well with the pumpkin hummus that we ordered. This was a za’atar roasted squash puree with a pumpkin seed and chilli relish. The chilli in the relish did give the whole thing a bit of a kick which was tasty. The squash was creamy and sweet; really good!
This was a challah that was fluffy, chewy, salty and sweet. I really liked the texture of this and like the flatbread, it also went well with the pumpkin hummus.
This was a portion of crispy halloumi. This also had za’atar seasoning on it and a drizzle of honey. They were nice and crispy and pretty big chunks. This unfortunately meant that they were a little tough. They were best when they were hottest, it was when they cooled down a bit that they became a bit of a jaw workout.
This was the goat shawarma hash. This was just a big cast iron bowl of potato chunks, roasted peppers, onion, shavings of goat meat, spicy mayo, all topped with a fried egg. The goat had little chunks of fat on it and the potatoes were crispy. The egg was a tiny bit overcooked for me but all mixed up, it made for one hell of a brunch dish.
This was our brunch; really tasty. I especially liked the flat bread and the hash. There’s a bunch of other stuff on the menu that looked great as well so would definitely go back to give it a go!
