Idk, I always saw Mary as more of an Alpha and John a Beta who rose to the occasion when his wife died. Or tried to, anyway. It would explain his postulations and insistence to always be macho, an attitude he pushed on to his sons.

That would be an alternative. I would also like beta!John. ;3 I’m really not all that set. Though I can never make up my mind if alpha women would be able to conceive children and someone kinda has to *lol*
