“After a lifetime of darkness, I want to leave something behind that is made of light.”
There was once a time when darkness shrouded the world, and the darkness had a queen. Adelina Amouteru is done suffering. She’s turned her back on those who have betrayed her and achieved the ultimate revenge: victory. Her reign as the White Wolf has been a triumphant one, but with each conquest her cruelty only grows. Adelina, the White wolf and her Roses are conquering lands and are looking for every Young Elite they can find, with her mercenaries Sergio and Magiano beside her. The voices in Adelina’s head keeps growing stronger and her hallucinations are starting to get out of control. It’s not just Adelina, but all the Young Elites are getting weaker. The ocean feels like death. And the Underworld is slowly poisoning the mortal world. Adelina is force to revisit her past. To save the world, she and the other Young Elites must make a sacrifice, they must go to the Underworld and return the gifts the gods and goddesses have given them.
They fought their way through the Underworld to get to the gods and goddesses. Unfortunately, some of them died including Adelina’s beloved sister Violetta. When they met the gods, Adelina sees her sister, entombed and dead. She was desperate to bring her sister back that she made a deal with Moritas, the goddess of death. She offered her life in exchange for her sister. After a few years, the mortal world is back to normal. Magiano, her lover, goes on a journey every night to follow the midnight star where every night Adelina would descend into the mortal world just to be with him.
The Midnight Star is the third book of the trilogy The Young Elites which was written by author Marie Lu. Unlike the first two books, it is darker and filled with sorrow, The Midnight Star is dark yet there is hope in it. Adelina went through a lot of pain and resentment in her whole life. She was filled with anger and thought that the only way to live her life was to seek revenge. This book is very well-written and the author really made sure that everything about the book made an impact to the reader. It’s like every character in the story represents at least one of our traits. The plot was very good, and it gave every character a dynamic change. And I love how there was a lesbian couple in it. I love this book because it’s not just about revenge but also a story of sacrificing things for your loved ones, doing everything just to be with the love of your life, and forgiving people.
One of the life lessons that I got from this book is perfectly quoted by the author which is, “To those who, in spite of everything, still choose goodness.” In this book I have a favorite part which I think is most powerful and enduring part and it was when Adelina gave up her life just to bring back Violetta’s life. And of course, my favorite character is none other than Adelina because I think I can sort of relate to her. She suffered her whole life yet at the end she still forgave the people that caused pain to her. Just like me, I also suffered from a lot of pain because of others but instead of clinging to the anger I have for them I chose to forgive them for myself.
There’s this specific part in the story which reminds me of something similar. “The world around me erupts. The power of it throws me to the ground. I suck in my breath and scream at the pain of my power being wrenched away from me. Darkness swirls and the whispers are suddenly deafening. They scream in my ears, their pain my own. I curl in one myself in defense.
Then-all of the sudden-they are gone. The whispers that have haunted me for so long. Every word, every hiss, every claw. Every tendril of darkness that wrapped itself in the corners of my chest.”
This part reminds me of something very important that I had to sacrifice. At first, it was very hard for me but when I just let it happen, it felt good. It’s like something so heavy was removed from my chest. I felt so light when it was done.
And to end this review I want to include something that I think most of us also think. Each time I finish a book there’s are questions that lingers in my mind that I would like to be answered. If I was given a chance to ask one of the characters in the book, I would ask Magiano if travelling to different places just to be with Adelina every night was worth it.
