Unfortunately psychology as a field and science was literally wrong about like. 90+% of things until at least the 1990s.
This, I suspect, Explains A Lot
The good news is we do know a lot better now!!
In a way that I am genuinely and honestly hopeful will be the physical-medicine equivalent of discovering antibiotics and germ therapy.
That is admittedly a big ass thing we will only be able to know in retrospect. But a lot of things we have learned and discovered and developed in the past 10-20 years are quite literally game changing
Source: While I in no way claim to know everything, I do have a large background in psychology, have worked professionally in mental health (though not in a way involving a degree), and also I've edited evidence-based mental health and psychology books for the last seven to ten years, and was academically required to spend way too much time reading/reading about Freud
