WIP Snippet!

The beautiful @thetrackrunner tagged me to post a snippet from one of my uncountable WIPs! And I shall comply! ;D

This is from a WIP who has been in the works for some time now and one that I hope I will be able to finish someday soon: The aptly named DickIsDamian’sDadAU:

Tim had left him – for a good reason even if his cause was fruitless -, Alfred was still mad, Cass deserved so much better, and Damian suffered under a choice first Bruce and then Dick had made… but standing together on this roof, the tear tracks on his face not even completely dry yet, and sharing something they had both loved and hated when it came to Bruce – to his dead dad – felt freeing:

“Well, as we just found out, I am not all that good in dealing with that shit either…”

There was still a bit of dry chuckle left in his voice when Clark spoke next:

“You don’t have to be. You still have a chance of not Bruce-ing this into a situation that is worse than it has to be. Take that control back. Tell Damian. Say sorry to whoever you pissed off. Go and grovel for a bit and be the person we both know you can be.”

“You always make it sound so easy.”

“It is not. Of course, it’s not… but you are my favorite hero. And Nightwing always saves the day”

Dick didn’t have the heart to correct him, didn’t have the strength to say that Nightwing was no more, that he was Batman now, and Batman was nobody’s favorite hero.

“Come on. Let me bring you home, so you can sleep of that alcohol poisoning, and greet tomorrow as the new day it is.”

I think I'll just always you in my head for Young Justice. And for stories I enjoyed immensely, that left me excited for more, with great characterization.

You are so sweet! I almost miss those days - life felt so much simpler then, though I may just be nostalgic.

I think I associate you with my favorite series that you wrote - “A Look”. I have the most specific memory of being in my government class in 9th grade and seeing that you updated and being really excited.

15. What good thing happened this summer?

Hm...technically, summer started yesterday, but I’m gonna answer this for summer 2019 because nothing good has happened this summer yet and I don’t really think anything good will

Last summer, I got my first job after graduating from college!  I’ll be coming up on my first year working at my job this August, so I guess that’s one thing to look forward to?  Though I definitely didn’t see my first year going like this.

But definitely getting my job was an amazing thing.  I got to live on my own in an apartment, meet a whole bunch of people at work, join an orchestra and meet even more people there.

And I can’t wait to get back to all of that, once everything is safe again.

50. What was the colour of the last hoodie you wore?

Oh, hm...I just stopped wearing hoodies on a daily basis because it’s getting warmer where I live now.  But I wanna say it was either maroon or grey?  Probably maroon.

113. What was your childhood nickname?

I didn’t really have one!  I mean, I have a nickname my family calls me, but they still call me that name, so it’s not a childhood nickname xD

150. Get the closest book next to you, open it to page 42, what’s the first line on that page? 

Okay so I’ve actually recently started working (using my computer) in my brother’s old room, but let me see what books he’s left around here...

LOL so the actual nearest book I can find doesn’t even have 42 pages xD I’ll keep searching though.

Omg, you guys are gonna get a laugh out of this.  I had to walk over to the other side of the room to find the nearest book, and well, here’s the first line on page 42:

4-8. We’ll ... entrance: i.e., we will not preface our dancing with speeches given by someone dressed up as Cupid or with a timidly spoken prologue

If anyone can guess what book this is from, I’ll be amazed!  (Hint: this is a story that my brother and I—and probably many other high school students—read in high school, and all of the even-numbered pages in my brother’s book are used to help understand the odd-numbered pages, which contain the actual text from the story.)

Honestly anywhere photogenic. Maybe some castles in Ireland? Or ooh I’ve heard Venice is nice.

Lol my family called me stumblefoot for like five years as a kid cause my feet grew faster than the rest of me and I tripped over anything in a 10 foot radius.

Oh it’s really simple! TAZ is about three boys named Magnus, Merle, and Taako who are tasked with finding  khhhshkhhhhsshhkhhhshkhkshskkhh khhhskhhhhhhsshkkhhhhhshhkshkkhhkshskshkhshshhkkhhh

I’m sorry that’s my favourite joke

Taz, or @theadventurezone, is a D&D podcast! It’s run by Griffin Mcelroy, who DMs for his brothers Justin (Taako, an elf wizard), Travis (Magnus, a human fighter), and his dad Clint (Merle, a dwarf Cleric). You might know of these guys from the time Griffin and Justin broke Fallout 4, or from the amount of times Griffin’s put amiibos in his mouth.

In short, Merle, Magnus, and Taako are recruited by a secretive, memory altering moon-based organization to find seven grand relics created by a group of red robed dicks who nearly caused the end of the world. They’re pretty successful, much to everyone’s surprise.

Along the way they meet Killain, a wonderfully badass orc who loves ducks and later gets a girlfriend who she loves a lot; the Director, their boss who definitely doesn’t care about them lots or enjoy their company what would ever give you that impression; Johann, an amazing bard who plays them the best song they’ve ever heard in an elevator, much to Taako’s horror; Angus Mcdonald, a 10 year old who is the world’s greatest detective and definitely not Taako’s adopted son nope; Pringles, or Robbie, who is arguably the worst roommate but they love him anyways; Carey, a glorious lesbian lizard and Magnus’ good pal; at least two fish friends, one of which has an angsty backstory; and so many more lovely NPCs.

Taz has an intense, emotional story with wonderful twists and amazing scenes, but plenty of jokes along the way. In addition, the Mcelroys make a constant effort to be as inclusive and unproblematic as possible, and will fully acknowledge their mistakes. 

The Adventure Zone is a glorious podcast, and I fully recommend checking it out! While the first arc is good, it nowhere near demonstrates what these characters are capable of. Here’s a link to episode 1.5 - don’t mind episode 1, I’ve listened to them both and 1.5 is just a better edited version of 1. And here’s a link to the rest!

And in case this isn’t convincing enough, guess who appeared in a recent donor/bonus episode as a bard? 

Lin-Manuel Miranda. I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

Damian Wayne!!

You better get ready! 

Damian Wayne:

How I feel about this character: I love him. Funny thing: I really disliked him in the beginning. I felt, that he was overrated, over-dramatic, and overly annoying and while, yes, Damian is still really dramatic and exceptionally annoying, I learned to love him. Because I realized that he is 10. And his first friendly human contact was Dick Grayson when he was 10 (I know he is 13 in canon now). And that explains so much and makes his arcs so much more interesting. I do still think that he is a bit overdone, and that not everything needs to have Robin!Damian in it, but I enjoy his character immensely (if he is allowed to grow).

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Very few, actually. I have read a few cute Jon/Dami fanfics and some Colin/Dami stuff, but I do enjoy aro/ace Damian quite a bit. 

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Oh, Damian is best friends with Colin and Mia and they reign terror on the world, but Gotham especially. And, of course, the fact that Dick is Damian’s first parental figure and they share a bond like no other. 

My unpopular opinion about this character: Damian is not Bruce’s carbon copy. He has more of Talia in his appearance than just his skin tone. I like to imagine that he has her nose and her eyebrows which infuriates Bruce because he was always afraid of that look Talia would send him when he was being an idiot. He is also not best friends with Jon. I like Jon, I really do, but this idea that Damian and Jon are best friends because Bruce and Clark are, seems ridiculous to me. Maybe when they are older, but young Damian would feel like a monster next to Jon who had a much more stable childhood. That is why I like Mia and Colin as best friends, because they are people who understand that Damian has been through shit just as they have too and they are separate people. Because Damian is not a Clone Of Bruce! 

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: A “redemption Arc” that sticks. Not that a ten year old needs a redemption arc. But you know, character growth that doesn’t get destroyed by the next story line. And Damian accepting that Dick is just as much of a Dad to him than his father is.
