I thought of a headcanon and broke my own heart so here goes

Imagine Hermione Granger in her muggle school, long before her life was changed by a single letter. Imagine her working hard everyday to earn her teachers praise and getting bullied for it. Getting insulted and beaten just for getting good grades and studying like she wanted to. Imagine her cracking the pattern, the lazier a student the more popular they were, and so going against herself and beginning to purposely slack on schoolwork, just to be more noticed. In a desperate last ditch attempt to make friends, she stops handing in her assignments, stops bothering to raise her hands in class. Nothing works, so she keeps trying and never picks back up. Then she gets her letter and her whole life changes. She has to be on top of the class no matter what just so she would not have to go back to muggle school. She has to avoid getting expelled at all costs not so she gets to learn about a magic world, but so she doesn’t have to go back to one where she’s invisible. And so she turns her life back around, picks up pace again and starts bustling. She works hard to get to the top of the class and stay there, all out of fear of going back to a place where she has no friends. And then, one day she hears the cute boys who were nice to her on her very first day talking about her. “She’s a nightmare, honestly. No wonder she hasn’t got any friends.”
