I’m genuinely so pissed for you about the amount of asks you get that act like Black people are like, a hivemind or a different species or something. It really shouldn’t be this hard to recognize that someone who’s coming from a different cultural, historical, familial, etc experience than you is a person with feelings. That seems like it would be exhausting to have to keep having to deal with. Do you have any favorite self-care things for if this ever gets to be a lot?
It can be exhausting, yes 😅 but when you open up the floor for people to ask whatever's on their mind, it comes with the territory. Only thing worse than me being asked as an individual, is that person believing that silly thing and then interacting with all Black people based on that belief. So, that's my glass half full take on it 👍🏾 There's been a couple of comments I've had that have genuinely made me distraught to the point of distress, but this has mostly been a positive experience.
Um, it helps to have boundaries. Deleting asks that don't capitalize Black (which, NOW I KNOW y'all see it thanks to the update). Taking my time to answer questions. Leaving some asks for personal interaction, not replying to every response I ever get. Picking battles is key. I'd never be able to stop fighting if I chose to fight every person that said something, and that's a headspace I've worked in my life to avoid anyway. I take breaks if it ever gets to be too overwhelming.
I admit I could practice better self care in life in general, though 😅 I usually just go "damn. I hate life." And then I keep it pushing bc what else I'm gone do? When I feel like it I read, I watch documentaries, I create.
