Draco, which is Latin for "dragon," is one of the original 48 constellation set down by Greek astronomy Ptolemy.

In Greek mythology, it could be one of several dragons. In one myth, Draco was one of the Gigantes, who battled the Olympian gods for ten years before Athena killed it and tossed in into the sky. As it flew towards the sky, it twisted upon itself and froze in the cold before it could fix itself. That could be the origin of this 19th century drawing:

In another myth, Draco represents the dragon Ladon, who guarded the golden apples of the Hesperides. When Heracles killed Ladon as part of his trials, Hera transformed Ladon into this constellation. Other times, it is the monstrous son of Gaia, Typhon.

In Arabic astronomy, Draco is not a dragon. Instead it is the Mother Camels. Two hyenas are attacking a baby camel, which is protected by four female camels. The nomads who own the camels are camped nearby. This is the origin of some of the star names below!

The named stars, in order of brightness are:

Eltanin (γ Draconis) is the brightest star in Draco. It is an orange giant star about 154 light years away. Eltanin is drifting slowly towards the solar system, so in about 1.5 million years, it will be within 28 light years of Earth, making it the brightest star in the night sky. Its name comes from the Arabic at-tinnin meaning "the great serpent."

Athebyne (η Draconis) is a binary star system about 92 light years away composed of a yellow giant and a red dwarf star. The name comes from the Arabic al-dhiʼbayn meaning "the wolves."

Rastaban (β Draconis) is a binary star system about 380 light years away. The primary star is a yellow supergiant star. The name comes from the Arabic phrase ra's ath-thu'ban meaning "head of the serpent."

Altais (δ Draconis) is a solitary yellow giant star about 98 light years away. If you were standing on the dwarf planet Ceres in the Asteroid Belt, this star would be your north pole star! Its name comes from the Arabic word Al Tāis meaning "the goat."

Aldhibah (ζ Draconis) is another binary star system about 330 light years away. The primary star is a blue giant star. Just like Altais, if you were standing on Venus, Aldhibah would be the south pole star; on Jupiter, it is the north pole star. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-dhiʼb meaning "the wolf."

Edasich (ι Draconis) is a solitary orange giant star about 101 light years from Earth. Its name comes from the Arabic Al Ḍhiba' meaning "the male hyena." It has one confirmed planet orbiting it, about 16.4 times the mass of Jupiter, named Hypatia, after the Greek mathematician.

Thuban (α Draconis) is a binary star system of two blue-white giant star about 303 light years away. Between about 3900-1800 BC, Thuban was the northern pole star! Its name comes from the Arabic word ṯuʿbān meaning "large snake."

Grumium (ξ Draconis) is a binary star system about 112 light years away. The primary is an orange giant star. Its name comes from the Latin word Grunnum meaning "snout."

Giausar (λ Draconis) is a solitary red giant star about 333 light years from Earth. Its name comes from the Persian word jauzahr, a technical term for the nodes of the Moon's orbit.

Dziban (ψ¹ Draconis) is a triple star system about 44 light years away. It consists of several yellow-white giant stars. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-dhiʼbayn meaning "the wolves."

Alsafi (σ Draconis) is a solitary red dwarf star about 18 light years away. Its name comes from the Arabic word Athāfi, the name of the Bedouin nomads' open air kitchens.

Alrakis (μ Draconis) is a quadruple star system about 89 light years away. The brightest stars in the system are both yellow-white giant stars. The name comes from the Arabic al-rāqiṣ meaning "the trotting camel." And yes, Frank Herbert did use this star as inspiration for the Dune series.

Fixed star Thuban, currently located at 7°48' Virgo, is renowned for its association with great wealth and prosperity. According to AstroMcouncil, Thuban signifies:

"Prospectors of gold and silver or those who are ministers of money."

• Elon Musk has this fixed star conjunct his chart ruler.

• Larry Ellison co-founder and CEO of Oracle has Thuban conjunct his Venus and Jupiter(both planets signify wealth - the former to a lesser extent while the latter to a greater extent). He is the second richest man as of November 2024.

• Bill Gates has this fixed star conjunct asteroid Mony (7782).

• Warren Buffet has Sun conjunct Thuban exact at 6 degrees Virgo effectively making him one of the world's wealthiest individuals.

• Steve Ballmer, like Bill Gates has Thuban conjunct asteroid Mony (exact)

------------------------------A Brief digression---------------------------

While researching this I predicted that since two of the former CEOs of Microsoft - Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer - had asteroid Mony in Virgo conjunct Thuban, the current CEO Satya Nadella would also have this asteroid conjunct Thuban in Virgo and voilà! There it was—asteroid Mony conjunct Thuban in his chart!

Some collages of my 2 MCs from IF games written by @justpked Fell Star and Beyond the Spider Lilies.

The left collages my Harbinger of Calamity, Thuban, wielder of blood magic and single monster mom to the Homunculus, Shian, post resurrection. It features her face claim, Lady Gaga, and pictures of some of Thuban's notable features like her red veil, horns, wings, 3 black eyes, and iridescent scales.

The collage on the right shows my Beyond the Spider Lilies MC, Princess Seleni Cereus Gaudare treasured daughter and heir of the Accursed King Aris. It also has her face claim, Dorra Zarrouk, and some pictures associated with her. The Red Spider Lilies and Night Blooming Cereus are the namesake flowers for both the story and Seleni. An albino Chimera for her pet, Baby's Breath, and pictures of gardens, a silhouette of a little girl holding her father's hand for her close relationship with her father, and a display specimen of a butterfly for her interest in entomology.

Some quick extra character lore: I decided to depict Seleni's pet as an albino Chimera as a little reference to my Harbinger since Thuban's Abyssal Beast form is pale and has many features similar to a Chimera like a lions mane, scales, horns, ect. As well as making her favorite butterflies the red blood drinking butterflies, Thuban can summon. At first, I was headcanon, maybe little Sece, curious about the Harbinger and wanting to learn more about her other than just what was officially recorded and started liking things associated with Thuban.

After falling into the Accursed × Harbinger Crack ship crossover, I now believe Sece loves those things because they remind her of beloved monster mommy (sure Thuban would technically be Sece's stepmother, but as far as Sece is concerned Thuban is the only mother she ever knew, doesn't matter if Thuban and Shian aren't related by blood or even human, family is family. )

Also, with the Beyond the Spider Lilies wip demo recently becoming available, it seems like another reason Sece wouldn't be frightened by Thuban's monstrous features like her wings, claws, teeth, ect. Is because Thuban probably reminds Seleni of her birth mother.🤔 I'm not sure if Sece even remembered much about her mother, considering she was still a baby, but considering the Mama's in game description, Seleni probably retained a kind of subconscious imprint about those features.

Thuban was Pole Star for the ancient Egyptians

Thuban isn’t a particularly bright star, but it holds a special place in the hearts of stargazers. That’s because Thuban – a relatively inconspicuous star in the constellation Draco the Dragon – was the Pole Star some 5,000 years ago, when the Egyptians were building the pyramids.

And there’s evidence that Thuban helped guide the ancient pyramid-builders. Some features inside the pyramids do align with the stars.

But while the pyramids appear to us as an enduring monument of ancient Egypt.  … the sky slowly changes. And, because Earth’s axis wobbles slowly over 26,000 years, the identity of our Pole Star changes. So Thuban is no longer our Pole Star.

But it’ll be the Pole Star again some 20,000 years from now. What will humanity be doing then?

Among the many mysteries surrounding Egypt’s pyramids are the so-called “air shafts” in the Great Pyramid of Giza. Originally, experts believed these narrow passageways were for ventilation while building the pyramids. In the 1960s, though, we realized the air shafts aligned with stars or areas of sky as the sky appeared for the pyramids’ builders 5,000 years ago.

One of the “air shafts” follows a crooked course through the Great Pyramid, so you couldn’t have sighted stars through it. To this day, the purpose of these passageways inside the Great Pyramid isn’t clear, although they might have been connected to rituals associated with the king’s ascension to the heavens. Whatever their purpose, the Great Pyramid of Giza reveals that its builders knew the starry skies intimately.

They surely knew Thuban was their Pole Star, the point around which the heavens appeared to turn.  ...
