I am feeling very tagged rn by @tarysande
Is there a snack you like to eat while writing?
Nope, I don’t eat while writing.
What time of day do you usually write?
When I’m awake. After my first coffee, I’m good.
/technically means ‘somewhere in the afternoon till way after midnight’ and also ‘will have dinner when someone puts it in front of me and reminds me to eat at least 3 times’
Everywhere except my computer desk. Either at home in my favorite chair, on the couch or any decent coffee place.
How often do you write a new fic?
For fanfic it varies a lot. I have ideas for ME:A fic and still several pages to type out. I also have a huge stack of DA:I stuff that should have been typed ages ago.
However, original fic? That’s a very different beast. The one thing I truly learned the last couple of years is this:
Doesn’t mean you can have only one project at the time, imo. I have 2 projects that I’m working on first draft of (or 3, if you squint), and one that needs another editing round. One of those is a ‘book 2′.
Do you listen to music while you write?
Usually, yes. Mostly movie or game OST’s (as they tend to be more instrumental).
Both. Both is good. I can fill several pages on notebooks, fountain pens, the charm of simple writing pads and Scrivener for the Mac.
Do you have a special pre-writing ritual?
No I don’t. I do try to make sure I have enough fluids (to drink) though. It also helps a lot to do morning pages, to get other stuff out of my system before I write. There are days I wake up where I left in the story I’m writing though, and in that case I just continue where I left (after my first coffee).
What do you do to get into the writing?
Start on an empty white page. If I really don’t know what or how or like ‘what even are words?’, starting on an empty white page usually helps.
/that victory is hard won; I used to have a lot of trouble getting started and continuing to the point I didn’t write for many years in between the years I did
Another trick is just ‘give me 3 random words’. I don’t know why this works for me, but it is a lot more helpful than, say, a prompt from one of those prompt lists.
A thing that doesn’t work for me? Sprints or timed challenges. Those feel to me like throwbacks into exam anxiety. I just cannot.
Do you have a reward system for word counts?
No I do not. I only ever look at my word count when I’m done for the day (and not even always). Having written is reward enough for me. Liking what I’ve written is even better.
Is there anything else about your writing process your readers don’t know?
I’m going to steal this from @tarysande and say ‘editing’. This is one reason why you want to finish your stuff, as that’s the only way to figure out the next step and how that works. I did Hippo’s Creativity Challenge last year (this year? sorry I’m really bad at dates) for fixing my original project and that helped SO MUCH.
Fixing the story and tying up knots and plots was so so very satisfying. I’d never had known if I had dropped that story I have been working on and off on for 5 years (I think it’s 5 >.< ) I know it needs more editing, but I’ve done some very major work on it and now it actually reads like a book (instead of a disjointed mess). It’s awesome.
/working on part 2 for that?
