I’ve started piecing together minor memories/fragments of memories.
This could be a breakthrough, but I’m also scared that I might piece together something that’s.. not good that should be kept hidden away.
I mean.. my brain buried a lot. There are whole years of time I’m missing. But I’m constantly torn between wanting some answers and keeping things buried because it might be better.
Follies Today
If Follies was created today (2016) using the same time gaps Sally and Phyllis would have made their debuts in 1986 and Heidi (the oldest gal who sings One More Kiss) would have debuted in 1963. So the modern day equivalent would of Heidi would be someone who made their debut in the original She Loves Me or Brigadoon. Where Sally and Phyllis would have been in Smile or Rags. Just something I think about.
here’s how i think it went:
war ends and they go back to konoha [they’re 17 years old]
a few months later -> chapter 699 [still 17]
2 years pass -> the last [they’re 19]
1 year (or less) passes -> sasuke comes back [20]
a few months of courting later -> marriage [still 20]
honeymoon (hehehe) [still 20]
1 year of married life -> kage meeting* [21]
a couple of months later -> sasuke has to leave but sakura wants to go with him, so they travel together and have a second honeymoon lol [still 21]
1 year of traveling together [22]
pregnancy [still 22]
for some reason sasuke has to team up with taka again, and it’s convenient because sakura can give birth in a safe place, their hideout, where karin was and could help with the birth [probably already 23]
sakura and sasuke go back to konoha with sarada [still 23]
2 years pass -> sasuke has to leave again, and this time sakura has to stay in konoha with sarada [they’re 25, sarada is 2 and not old enough to remember sasuke well later]
3 years pass -> flashback in which sarada gets sick and then needs glasses, and sakura pokes her forehead [28 and 5]
2 years pass -> chapter 700 [30 and 7]
5 years pass -> gaiden [35 and 12] so yeah, this timeline makes perfect sense to me, hope it’s right
*edit: kage meeting probably happened after sarada, when they’re 25 years old, since they look a bit older
do you know anything about a time jump in ADOS??
Nope, this is the first I’ve heard of it. But I have to say, I doubt that’ll happen. GRRM mentions in so many interviews now how the dream of a time gap has completely died at this point.
It should be noted that the time gap that was supposed to happen between ASoS and AFFC/ADWD was not the first plan of time jumps. GRRM always intended to age up the kids. That’s why he had a POV that was sevenat the start and two more that were prepubescent as well as a three year old Stark in general.
The series expanded from what GRRM originally envisioned-one of the reasons that the number of books has increased so much and big characters/original POVs like Sansa and Bran get totally cheated on chapter numbers in the AFFC/ADWD time since it was not initially accounted for so their stories are kind of paused at the moment.
Anyway, the original plan involved time jumps between each chapters which would have aged up everyone so much more.
I’m obsessed with the five-year gap you originally planned in the middle of the series. How would that have happened?
Originally, there was not supposed to be any gap. There was just supposed to be a passage of time, as the book went forward. My original concept back in 1991 was, I would start with these characters as children, and they would get older. If you pick up Arya at eight, the second chapter would be a couple months later, and she would be eight and a half and [then] she’d be nine. [This would happen] all within the space of a book.
But when I actually got into writing them, the events have a certain momentum. So you write a chapter and then in your next chapter, it can’t be six months later, because something’s going to happen the next day. So you have to write what happens the next day, and then you have to write what happens the week after that. And the news gets to some other place.
And pretty soon, you’ve written hundreds of pages and a week has passed, instead of the six months, or the year, that you wanted to pass. So you end a book, and you’ve had a tremendous amount of events — but they’ve taken place over a short time frame and the eight-year-old kid is still eight years old.
So that really took hold of me for the first three books. When it became apparent that that had taken hold of me, I came up with the idea of the five-year gap. “Time is not passing here as I want it to pass, so I will jump forward five years in time.” And I will come back to these characters when they’re a little more grown up. And that is what I tried to do when I started writing Feast for Crows. So [the gap] would have come after A Storm of Swords and beforeFeast for Crows.
So that’s what happened. He always intended to age up the kids. If he’d known that he would have likely had aged Bran, Arya, Sansa, Dany, and Jon to be more like 12, 14, 16, 18, and 19 years old respectively. Because it’s pretty clear he wanted them to be at least that old by the end.
As it is now, it seems that the end of the series will feature a 12 year old Arya, a 14 year old Sansa, a 10 year old Bran, and so on.
He then reworked the time gap to be a literal jump between books of five years.
…But what I soon discovered — and I struggled with this for a year — [the gap] worked well with some characters like Arya — who at end the of Storm of Swords has taken off for Braavos. You can come back five years later, and she has had five years of training and all that. Or Bran, who was taken in by the Children of the Forest and the green ceremony, [so you could] come back to him five years later. That’s good. Works for him.
Other characters, it didn’t work at all. I’m writing the Cersei chapters in King’s Landing, and saying, “Well yeah, in five years, six different guys have served as Hand and there was this conspiracy four years ago, and this thing happened three years ago.” And I’m presenting all of this in flashbacks, and that wasn’t working. The other alternative was [that] nothing happened in those five years, which seemed anticlimactic.
The Jon Snow stuff was even worse, because at the end of Storm he gets elected Lord Commander. I’m picking up there, and writing “Well five years ago, I was elected Lord Commander. Nothing much has happened since then, but now things are starting to happen again.” I finally, after a year, said “I can’t make this work.”

I know that some of the stuff you wrote to take place after the five-year gap is in the books including Dance with Dragons.
Dance with Dragons and Feast for Crows. Some of it is in there. Some of it I’ve reworked. A version of it is in there, but not the same version is in there. Some of it is just out. It just didn’t work. -GRRM
That interview is from post-ADWD. The time jump ideas are pretty dead at this point. All of GRRM’s interviews seem to indicate he’s given up on them.
I said long before the Mercy chapter that I expected GRRM was going to have Arya go through puberty in TWoW because I was sure he was going to treat Arya (and also Sansa/Bran) as if they had been aged up in many ways. He’s given up on his time jumps, but his plans are still in tact. People should maybe prepare themselves for kids that don’t at all act like kids. He already admits he thinks of Arya like she’s forty in many ways.
Basically, he’s going to act like the kids aren’t kids and keep their endgames the same- even if it’s a stretch:

A: It worked for characters like Arya and Dany but not so much for the adults or those who had a lot of action coming. He was writing chapters where Jon thought, “Well, not a lot has happened these past five years, it’s been kinda nice.” And Cersei chapters where she thought, “Well, I’ve had to kill sooo many people the last five years.” So he ended up dropping it. He said he would have done it sooner if he hadn’t told so many fans about it. And there is no gap anymore. “If a twelve-year old has to conquer the world, then so be it.” [source]
So I doubt that there will be any new time gap, things have heated up too much for there to be any place for one really, but I haven’t heard anything recently one way or the other.
The hell? It's 3045, it was like, 2012 just a week ago!
