WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS TIP YOUR WAITRESS, BARISTA, ETC.
So I felt the need to make this post after my very interesting day yesterday not really as a complaint but to help bring awareness to this issue cause while it might be a small thing to someone who works out of these jobs it is completely different for us who live. I have always felt that you should tip the people making your food and drinks regardless of service. Now most people would think that's ridiculous but here me out. Okay now first of all you are technically supposed to tip 15 to 20 percent regardless of service. Not every one does sadly but it is an expectation that is at any restaurant like establishment. Basically if there is a tip jar, a full service establishment, or if you see the little line under the price that says 'TIP', you are expected to tip.
Second off regardless of service mainly because you have no idea what could have gone on in that persons day. Now I can understand if they are being right out rude just to be rude but really no one is malicious without some sort of cause to be. For example, Yesterday night I was working my barista like job at the cafe I work at and I had 3 instances that night with three very difficult customers. The first being a woman and her husband who believed that Starbucks had the monopoly on espresso drinks and that no one anywhere else could sell them. She told me that she wanted to get something that was closest to an Americano from Starbucks. Now for those of you who aren't coffee drinkers, an Americano is espresso drink with two shots of espresso and water to make it stronger. That is the name used universally for that drink. So when I proceeded to tell her I could just make her an Americano she looked shocked and told me she was surprised that I knew what that was even though I am a barista/cook who works with coffee almost constantly.
The next interesting customer was a man. He really needed to use the restroom but as we have one stall restrooms both were locked. So instead of trying to find a restroom close by as there is plenty he proceeded to attempt (although he didnt get to anything before I has to handle the situation) to pee in one of the fake plants we have by the restroom
And lastly was a very upset woman. I have no idea why she was so upset but she was and when my coworker told her order was ready she was not paying attention as my coworker called out that he food was ready twice and set it on the counter right in front of her line of vision. So when she finally came back to reality she told me that she had been waiting for 15 minutes without us telling her the food was done. And was angry because now the food was most likely cold. Now my coworker speaks Spanish better than English so I tried to ask comfirm in Spanish if she told the woman her food was ready. Said woman cut me off said no she didn't say anything. As she was being disrespectful at that point I corrected her and told her 'No ma'am. I heard her call it out to you. Twice in fact'. Woman whipped her head around and IN FRONT one of our security guards and gave my the deadliest glare I have seen and I stared back up at her and stood my ground cause aggression will not be tolerated in my cafe. She then proceed to storm out the door.
So after my very eventful day yesterday you can understand how I was dissapointed to find less then 10 pecent out the hundred customers we had yesterday tipped my coworker and I
This is what waiters, waitress, baristas, etc. deal with pretty frequently. And while it is our job to deal with difficult customers it is disappointing to see the customers we treated nicely and gave extra attention to do not care to show their appreciation. Most of us are getting paid minimum wage, part time jobs because it is the easiest field that hires quickly and we really need a job. Whether it be we are going to school and need money for tuiton or we have a family we need to support it is not a job of choice but of necessity.
SO PLEASE TIP REGARDLESS OF SERVICE. I KNOW FOR A FACT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS EXPERIENCED THIS.
