And that was how Valerie ended up here, babysitting Phantom—her goddamn ex—in Geneva for a clean energy conference. On top of that, she was supposed to present a paper written by the CIA, her new employer, to scientists and politicians they mingled with one day and spied on the next.

Valerie wasn't sure what exactly their deal entailed, though she was certain it involved a large amount of blackmail, but the reminder seemed to do the trick. Danny removed his palm from his chin and, with the acting skills of an Oscar nominee, looked out the window and grinned. 

His naked, smiling teeth looked too much like Phantom. Then again, everything he did these days looked too much like Phantom.

It was impossible to look at him without analyzing every fleck of skin, every strand of hair, to compare the similarities between him and Phantom. His bright blue eyes, which used to reflect the sky, now she saw the tiny flecks of acid green underneath. The nervous tic of rubbing his hand behind his neck was now the tic of Phantom best analyzing how to take down his opponent. And that goofy smile, one she thought had been so innocent and oblivious before, was now the twisted, manipulative smile of Phantom.

I took a pause from all IF because my computer that I was working on shitted and died. :(!

What are some of the inspirations behind Mouths of Elysium?

hello!! thank u so much for indulging me lmao!!!

chiefly, Jim Henson's Labyrinth has been on constant rotation in my mind. i love the dark fantasy setting and i think being stuck in a maze that hates you is inherently compelling.

another huge inspiration for me has been Frankenstein! im unsure why the mechanics of the book got stuck in my head, but they did and somehow grew to this weird conglomeration of this nasty, dark fantasy.

i also! would say i drew some inspiration from the locked tomb series when it comes to the devotional attitudes towards the king. i think there's something delicious about this weird obeisance boarding wildly inappropriate desire for someone who has essentially made it law that he use you for his own. be that whatever it is and whatever he deems fit.
